The TGA has launched a fresh probe into Pete Evans’s claims a year after the divisive celebrity chef was fined $25k by the administration.

Pete Evans gets weirder: How much more can he lose?

The Therapeutic Goods Administration has launched a new investigation into Pete Evans and his claims about therapeutic goods, just over a year after the controversial celebrity chef was fined more than $25,000, TV Blackbox reports.

Last April, the $15,000 “BioCharger” device was investigated by the TGA after the divisive 48-year-old spruiked it to his Facebook followers, declaring the product could treat a range of ailments, including COVID-19.

The investigation led to Evans’ company being issued two fines totalling $25,200. The TGA stated at the time that it was “monitoring noncompliance, particularly in relation to the advertising of products that claim to prevent or cure COVID-19 and will continue to take action to any advertisements that do not meet the requirements, including those that seek to mislead consumers”.

Sources told TV Blackbox that the new investigation into Evans is not related to any COVID-19 products, “but other therapeutic items he has been but shouldn’t be advertising”.

According to the outlet, Evans does not yet know he’s being investigated.

A TGA spokesman told news.com.au it “does not provide comment on compliance matters”.

The former My Kitchen Rules judge has repeatedly come under fire for his promotion of conspiracy theories – including claiming coronavirus was a hoax, and questioning the efficacy of vaccines and masks – so much so that he was booted off both Facebook and Instagram.

“We removed Pete Evans’ account for repeatedly sharing debunked claims about the coronavirus or vaccines,” Instagram’s parent company Facebook said in a statement in February.

“We don’t allow anyone to share misinformation about COVID-19 that could lead to imminent physical harm or about COVID-19 vaccines that have been debunked by public health experts.”

He was also dropped by his publisher, Pan McMillan, and reality shows SAS Australia and I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! after posting a meme with a neo-Nazi symbol on his social media.

Evans, who now resides in Pottsville near Byron Bay in NSW’s north, announced earlier this year he will join politics and run for the Senate with former One Nation Senator Rod Culleton’s The Great Australian Party.

“Pete Evans has maintained his principles and inspired others in the face of uncommon adversity,” Mr Culleton said in a statement announcing Evans’ candidacy for the upcoming federal election.

“Pete is fully supportive of the GAP ethos, supporting restoration of the commonwealth and the preservation of democracy in Australia.

“Throughout his engagement with GAP’s national selection committee, Pete presented an unwavering commitment to advancing the freedoms of all Australians. As a result, he has been resoundingly approved.

“Pete Evans has consistently demonstrated courage in exposing matters of public information and interest, provoking much needed debate despite personal cost to himself.

“I believe Pete Evans will effectively and diligently represent GAP’s growing membership base and all NSW constituents. Pete possesses the essential attributes required to challenge the status quo and restore the rule of law as defined in our constitution.”
