Maggie Smith’s surprising net worth revealed after her death

Throughout her long and successful career, the Harry Potter actress managed to earn a pretty penny, and then some.

Legendary Harry Potter actress Dame Maggie Smith’s net worth has been revealed after the tragic news of her death at age 89.

The internationally recognised actress enjoyed a career spanning six decades in Hollywood, amassing a fortune worth millions.

Equity Atlas reported that by 2024, the mother-of-two had accumulated a net worth of $US40 million ($58 million).

One of her most success roles on Downton Abbey, which in 2021 alone earned her more than $5 million.

Since its inception in 2010, Smith had been an integral part of the Downton Abbey saga, proudly portraying the matriarch Violet Crawley.

Smith appeared in more than 60 films during her career, as well as more than 70 stage productions and numerous television shows.

She’s estimated to have earned about $14 million for her work on the entire Harry Potter film series.

While she kept her personal live relatively private, it’s known that Smith owned properties in both London and West Sussex at the time of her passing.

The beloved British star died in a London hospital early Friday morning, local time.

Her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens shared the sad news in a statement shared via their publicist.

“It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith,” it read.

“She passed away peacefully in hospital early this morning, Friday 27th September.

“An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end.

“She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their care and unstinting kindness during her final days.

“We thank you for all your kind messages and support and ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Following the news of her death, Daniel Radcliffe, Smith’s Harry Potter co-star, issued a statement honouring the actress, who portrayed Professor Minerva McGonagall, the head of Gryffindor House, in the franchise.

“The first time I met Maggie Smith I was 9 years old and we were reading through scenes for ‘David Copperfield’, which was my first job. I knew virtually nothing about her other than that my parents were awe-struck at the fact that I would be working with her,” Radcliffe said in a statement to Variety.

“The other thing I knew about her was that she was a Dame, so the first thing I asked her when we met was ‘would you like me to call you Dame?’ at which she laughed and said something to the effect of ‘don’t be ridiculous!’ I remember feeling nervous to meet her and then her putting me immediately at ease. She was incredibly kind to me on that shoot, and then I was lucky enough to go on working with her for another 10 years on the ‘Harry Potter’ films.”

His heartwarming statement continued: “She was a fierce intellect, a gloriously sharp tongue, could intimidate and charm in the same instant and was, as everyone will tell you, extremely funny. I will always consider myself amazingly lucky to have been able to work with her, and to spend time around her on set. The word legend is overused but if it applies to anyone in our industry then it applies to her. Thank you, Maggie.”
