WARNING: CONFRONTING

Disturbing footage of troubled actor Johnny Depp slamming various objects while hurling insults at his ex-wife in a morning rage has been played in court this week.

Depp, 58, is suing his ex-partner Amber Heard, 35, for defamation over an article the actress penned in 2018 about escaping a domestic violence situation.

While the piece did not mention Depp, the Pirates of the Caribbean actor claims references to their failed marriage were obvious. He claims Heard’s op-ed impacted his work as an actor and lost him roles.

Several damning photos and texts have been aired throughout the explosive trial, showing Depp in various states of heavy intoxication as well as seemingly on the hunt for drugs during a trip to Australia.

A video shared on social media which was played to the jury amid the ongoing trial this week sees Depp stomping around a kitchen and aggressively opening and closing cabinet doors as he fetches a wine glass and tops himself up, before flying off the handle when he notices he’s being recorded.

“What happened?” Heard asks as Depp walks past the camera holding a white sheet, ignoring her as he walks over the cabinet and slams the door several times.

“Nothing happened this morning, you know that,” Heard then says.

“Were you even here?” Depp, wearing sunglasses and a cowboy hat, says off camera as another crashing sound is heard. When Heard responds “no” he says: “So then nothing happened to you this morning.”

Heard then says he was “so sweet and nice” when she woke up, sounding confused by his apparent rage.

“We’re not even fighting this morning. All I did was say sorry.”

“Did something happen to YOU, this morning? I don’t think so,” Depp then yells, slamming another object on the counter.

“You wanna see crazy, I’ll give you crazy,” he says while topping up his glass with red wine.

“Have you drunk this whole thing this morning?” asks Heard, pointing to the bottle of wine.

At the end of the video, Depp erupts as he notices Heard’s phone is on record.

“Oh, you’ve got this going? You’ve got this going?” he shouts, grabbing the phone as the image distorts and another crash is heard.

The footage ends with Depp appearing to storm off, calling her an “ass” in the distance.

It was presented to the court by Heard’s lawyer this week, with the actor admitting there’s “a possibility” he was drunk at the time.

“I did assault a couple of cabinets, but I didn’t touch Miss Heard,” Depp said of the video.

Depp is suing Heard for US$50 million ($A67m) over a 2018 Washington Post op-ed in which she wrote about being a victim of domestic abuse.

He claims the allegations were clearly directed at him because they came two years after Heard filed for divorce and a restraining order alleging that he physically abused her.

Depp says the allegations are false and cost him lucrative film work in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Heard has countersued for $100 million ($A134m), claiming she suffered “rampant physical violence and abuse” at his hands.

Much of the trial has been centred around the former couple’s trip to Australia in 2015, during which they smuggled their dogs Pistol and Boo into the country, for which they later had to publicly apologise.

The Virginia court heard Depp admit to smoking cannabis and looking into obtaining ecstasy and cocaine while in Australia. But the actor said there was no evidence he actually took either drug during the visit where he was filming Pirates of the Caribbean.

The court also heard revelations about allegedly violent incidents and explosive texts sent by Depp, that he had a “sobriety nurse” to keep him on the wagon while filming and that Heard allegedly put out a cigarette on his face.

Taking the stand on Tuesday, local time, Depp continued to deny he had ever physically hurt his ex.

“Never did I myself reach the point of striking Ms. Heard in any way, nor have I ever struck any woman in my life,” he said.

He said Heard’s “untrue” accusations had “permeated the industry,” which has caused irreparable damage to his reputation.

“I'm obsessed with the truth so today is my first opportunity that I’ve been able to speak about this case in full for the first time,” Depp told the court. “I felt a responsibility of clearing the record.”
