Jennifer Lopez’s ‘This Is Me … Now: A Love Story’ trailer suggests star is sex-addicted insomniac
Jennifer Lopez is painted as a sex-addicted insomniac in a truly bonkers trailer for her upcoming visual album, which is based off her own journey to finding love.
The first trailer for the new Jennifer Lopez movie, This Is Me … Now: A Love Story, has dropped, and all we can say is … um, what?
Far be it for me, a lowly entertainment writer, to shade Jenny from the block, but this trailer — which you can watch in the player above — is truly bonkers. It’s as if some executive at Amazon Prime asked JLo what genre she wanted, and she simply replied, “Yes.”
It’s a sci-fi epic, it’s a gritty thriller, it’s a romantic comedy, it’s a steam punk action flick, it’s a musical homage to Singin’ in the Rain. It’s every genre you can think of all smashed into one, told in JLo’s “own words”.
In one scene, JLo faces an intervention from her friends for being a “sex addict.” In the next, JLo earnestly opens up about her insomnia in a support-group meeting.
In the next, she’s swinging around a lamppost in the rain like Gene Kelly.
Then, suddenly, she is flying through space. Again … what?
It’s baffling, to say the least.
This Is Me Now: A Love Story is technically not a movie. In the press release for the film sent out by Amazon Prime, This Is Me … Now: A Love Story was described not as a movie, but as “a narrative-driven, cinematic original,” that “showcases [Lopez’s] journey to love through her own eyes.”
It’s a 65-minute special that will be released in tandem with Lopez’s next studio album, This Is Me … Now, on February 16. (The title is a play on Lopez’s 2002 album, This Is Me … Then.)
Perhaps JLo is trying to follow in the footsteps of Beyoncé, who released the critically acclaimed film Lemonade alongside the album of the same name in 2016.
But this is truly taking the concept of a “visual album” to new levels of absurdity.
The “cinematic original” was directed by Dave Meyers (known for directing popular music videos like ME! by Taylor Swift and HUMBLE. by Kendrick Lamar), and written by Lopez and Matt Walton.
The This Is Me Now cast is a star-studded ensemble – Fat Joe, Trevor Noah, Kim Petras, Post Malone, Keke Palmer, Sofia Vergara, Jenifer Lewis, Jay Shetty, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Sadhguru, Tony Bellissimo, Derek Hough, Trevor Jackson, Paul Raci, Bella Gagliano, Brandon Delsid, Ashley Versher, Malcolm Kelner, Alix Angelis, Danielle Larracuente, Matthew Law and JLo’s husband Ben Affleck.
I urge you to take a moment to read that cast list back. Soak in how eclectic that is. I mean, Neil deGrasse Tyson? What is going on?!
