Jennifer Grey’s ‘nose job from hell’ after Dirty Dancing

Jennifer Grey was one of the most famous actresses of the late ’80s, until she underwent surgery which ultimately hurt her career.

Seven years after becoming a superstar in the hit movie Dirty Dancing, Jennifer Grey made a special appearance on Friends.

For someone who was instantly recognisable as Baby Houseman, fans were excited for her stint on the popular sitcom for “The One with the Evil Orthodontist” episode.

But Grey, now 60, looked so unrecognisable as the character Mindy that viewers questioned whether or not it was actually her.

The then 34-year-old had undergone two nose job surgeries not long after rising to fame and – in quite a rare outcome – it made her face look completely different.

Fans, who fell in love with her as Baby, were left disappointed by the drastic transformation, and for a while it severely impacted Grey’s career.

Grey took a small break from acting after Dirty Dancing. Weeks before the film’s 1987 premiere she’d been in a car crash in Ireland with then-boyfriend, fellow actor Matthew Broderick, who she had starred with in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off the previous year.

Grey was in the passenger seat while Broderick drove, and drifted onto the wrong side of the road, colliding with an oncoming car. Grey suffered whiplash as a result – but the collision killed a mother and daughter in the other vehicle.

This made celebrating the release of her smash hit film difficult as she was suffering from “survivor’s guilt”, and Grey retreated after the promotional tour ended.

Her next film was the 1989 period comedy Bloodhounds of Broadway, which starred Madonna. It was savaged by critics, and earned Madonna a Golden Raspberry nomination.

It would be another three years until Grey would appear on the big screen again in the movie Wind. It was a box-office flop, making $5.5 million in the US against a $US29 million budget.

She then underwent surgery before appearing on Friends in 1995.

In a 2012 interview, Grey addressed the nose job saga, something she has managed to crack a joke about over the years.

“I went in the operating theatre a celebrity and come out anonymous,” she said at the time.

“It was like being in a witness protection program or being invisible.

“It was the nose job from hell. I’ll always be this once-famous actress nobody recognises because of a nose job.”

Over the years she has maintained an on-and-off career in Hollywood, appearing in various small and big budget movie and TV projects, but she never quite reached the heights of late-80s fame.

Thankfully she isn’t desperate to make a dollar, as Dirty Dancing is the gift that keeps giving.

Earlier this year Grey announced her divorce from her husband of almost 20 years, Marvel actor Clark Gregg, with whom she has daughter Stella, 18.

And in a judgment filing obtained by People, Grey is set to keep all the money she made and continues to make from Dirty Dancing.

As for what she’s up to now, Grey appears to be as fit as ever, uploading a sensational video of her gruelling workout on Instagram during isolation.

She will also feature in a currently untitled Dirty Dancing project, which was announced in August. Grey is set to executive produce.

“It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that have made it the biggest-selling library title in the company’s history,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said.

The first Dirty Dancing movie grossed $US218 million at the global box office off a $5 million production cost.

It also won an Oscar and Golden Globe for the original song (I’ve Had) The Time Of My Life by Frank Previte, John DeNicola and Donald Markowitz.
