The iconic Dirty Dancing moment that was totally unscripted
IT’S one of the most memorable moments in Dirty Dancing - but the director never intended this scene to be in the movie.
NEARLY 30 years ago, Dirty Dancing won us over with its sensationally choreographed dance scenes - but there was one in particular that was never actually meant to be in the movie.
When Baby (Jennifer Grey) and Johnny (Patrick Swayze) crawl around doing a flirty dance on the floor during rehearsal, it was only ever intended as a warm-up exercise.
However, director Emile Ardolino loved it so much he made it part of the movie — and the rest was history.
Here are some other facts you probably didn’t know about Dirty Dancing.
AUDIENCES INITIALLY HATED IT
It’s hard to imagine now knowing what we do, but Dirty Dancing totally bombed with initial test audiences.
In fact, they hated it so much it was almost released straight to video.
As we all know, it went on to become a massive success despite those terrible early reviews.
JENNIFER GREY TOO SCARED TO DO LIFTING SCENE
That iconic lift to Time Of My Life right at the end of the movie was too scary for Grey to attempt in rehearsals. She only ever did it once — and that was on camera.
Here’s how it turned out:
VAL KILMER TURNED IT DOWN
Val Kilmer was originally offered the part of Johnny, but turned it down at the last minute, paving the way for Patrick Swayze to dance his way into our hearts.
SARAH JESSICA PARKER AND BILLY ZANE BOTH AUDITIONED
The other “almost” stars of the movie were Sarah Jessica Parker and Billy Zane. Both auditioned and were strongly considered but their dancing skills apparently let them down.
PATRICK SWAYZE HATED ‘BABY IN THE CORNER’ LINE
“Nobody puts Baby in the corner” is one of the most quoted lines in movie history — but it nearly didn’t make the cut.
Swayze revealed in his memoir, The Time Of My Life, that he thought it was corny and tried to have it taken out. Thankfully, he was unsuccessful.
SWAYZE DIDN’T WANT TO BE IN A SEQUEL
The actor, who died in 2009 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, was reportedly offered $6 million to do a Dirty Dancing sequel but said no.
