Jeffrey Epstein girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell fled to ‘gorgeous property’: FBI
Ghislaine Maxwell “slithered away to a gorgeous property” once news of her association with the billionaire paedophile became public.
The one-time girlfriend and alleged accomplice of sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein “slithered away to a gorgeous property” once news of her association with the billionaire paedophile became public, according to the FBI.
Ghislaine Maxwell was arrested on Thursday and charged by New York federal prosecutors with six charges connected to an ongoing investigation into Epstein’s sex trafficking of young girls.
Maxwell only recently bought the million-dollar home in the tiny town of Bradford in New Hampshire, where she knew nobody. Before then, she had been on the run.
A real estate listing describes the designer house as an “amazing retreat for the nature lover who also wants total privacy”.
Epstein was arrested in 2019 and charged for trafficking of minors in one of the most high profile and shocking cases in recent history.
The mysterious socialite and financier had links to celebrities, royalty and politicians across the world. Epstein died in his jail cell in August of 2019.
William Sweeney, the FBI New York’s assistant director in charge, said the bureau had been “discreetly keeping tabs” on Maxwell after she fled to the luxurious home in New Hampshire, in the New England region in the US.
The million-dollar double-storey home is set on sprawling grounds and includes a sun room, waterfall, large fish pond, barn and basement.
The house has high, vaulted cathedral ceilings and exposed beams, and outlooks over the surrounding mountainous landscapes. The home last sold for US $1,070,750 (A$1,545,986).
The home is set in woodlands in the remote town of Bradford, which has a population of only 1600.
US law enforcement understands Maxwell bought the home in December, before which time she’d been moving from place to place. A detention memo said she had “no other known connections” in the small town of Bradford which is 48km from the nearest town of Concord — the capital of New Hampshire.
“We learned she had slithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire, continuing to live a live a life of privilege while her victims continue to live with the trauma inflicted upon them years ago,” Assistant Director Sweeney said today.
“We moved when we were ready and Ms Maxwell was arrested without incident.”
The FBI has alleged throughout 1994 to 1997 Maxwell assisted Epstein in committing crimes against minors.
US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Andy Strauss explained how they moved to arrest Maxwell, saying: “an eye was being kept, and information was being collected and then the indicted was just recently voted and filed and that is when we were able and prepared to move to arrest her.”
Mr Strauss alleged Maxwell would “recruit, entice, groom, and abuse” various victims who were under the age of 19.
He also added that the FBI “alleged Ms Maxwell lied under oath.”
