Hugh Sheridan has revealed how they keep in touch with loved ones who have died.

The entertainer has had a tough 12 months, losing three best friends as well as their father, Denis, who died last May aged 76.

Speaking to news.com.au’s podcast, I’ve Got News For You, Sheridan said they like to communicate with those on the other side by using the ‘shuffle’ option on Apple music.

“Well, it’s … a weird thing to do,” Sheridan told podcast host Andrew Bucklow, “but basically, I put my phone on shuffle, so just take Apple Music or whatever … and you just push shuffle, but you ask them (deceased loved ones) to DJ for you.

“That sounds weird, but it actually is very cathartic and very real and sort of really makes you know that they’re there,” he said.

Sheridan said that the first time they asked their dad to play a song for them, the song that started playing on shuffle was Dance with My Father by Luther Vandross.

“That was the first song that he played when I said, ‘dad, can you just play me a song?’ I put my phone on shuffle. It could have played anything, not (just) from my library but anything on Apple Music, and it played that.”

Sheridan told I’ve Got News For You they were an emotional wreck after the song started playing.

“I howled crying, I felt very much that he was with me,” they said.

Sheridan said they use the technique “all the time” now, adding: “Sometimes they make me laugh, sometimes they make me cry, and then they make you laugh again.”

Sheridan has just finished performing their show called My Way at the Adelaide Fringe Festival.

The show featured Sheridan singing jazz, swing and blues songs – including Dance With My Father.
