Hugh Sheridan slams ’hurtful’ article about split from fiance

“Shame on you”: The Packed to the Rafters star has hit out in a lengthy Instagram post, a day after announcing a split from fiance Kurt Roberts.

Hugh Sheridan has slammed an Australian pop culture website for a post which declared their recent post announcing their relationship break-up was “cringeworthy” and “deranged.”

The Australian actor, who recently came out as non-binary, yesterday revealed their sudden break-up with their fiance of eight months, Kurt Roberts, in a lengthy Instagram post alongside two selfies of the pair.

Despite the couple calling time on their whirlwind relationship, Sheridan spoke of their “great love,” wishing Roberts a happy birthday.

Roberts returned the gesture, posting a three-minute video showing candid photos and clips of them together, all set to the music of John Legend’s All Of Me.

Pop culture Pedestrian TV reported on the split yesterday with a story that began, “Hugh Sheridan has revealed they have split from their fiance in a cringe-worthy and honestly kinda deranged birthday post on Instagram dedicated to their best friend. Huh?”.

Sheridan slammed the “hurtful” story in a furious post to their Instagram account, with Roberts also dubbing it “absolutely disgusting behaviour” in the comments section.

“Shame on you @pedestriantv I’m so done with being kicked in the guts for being honest and trying to help people be ok with vulnerability,” Sheridan wrote.

“How can you call any human ‘honestly kinda deranged’ for being honest? How can you sleep at night? By Kurt and I showing respect and love to a relationship while we’re clearly hurting and have been for a long time is not exactly an easy thing to share.”

It appears the article has been majorly watered down since, with the writer’s byline being removed, and the copy now simply describing the split announcement as “confusing”.

An Editor’s Note at the top of the story now reads: “An earlier version of this article included a line that described the Instagram posts as “kinda deranged”. This was a poor choice of words and we apologise for any offence caused.”

Sheridan said the website should have taken down the entire story.

“I’m so sorry @kurtroberts_ everything I said was true and this should’ve been taken down at the same time they edited out ‘honestly kinda deranged’ because someone obviously realised that might be offensive. So disappointed and hurtful to us both.”

Sheridan’s earlier post about their split from Roberts began with the actor revealing they were supposed to be landing in Sydney on Friday to wish their boyfriend a happy birthday, before revealing their relationship had fizzled out.

“In retrospect, having a first public relationship, that public, that fast, might’ve been too much pressure on us,” they wrote.

“Maybe it was COVID or quarantines or us working to (sic) hard (I take the blame for full responsibility for the working hours), maybe it’s dads death or all the above.

“The point is Kurt is incredibly kind, someone who is earnestly caring and helped me through a very tough time.

“Transparency is what I promised you all. For now we didn’t make it, but we tried very, very hard, I’m so sorry for us that it wasn’t easy and I’m sorry for the added pressure.

“Lots learned, the heartache is heavy, but zero regrets for the greatest love.”

The couple were engaged in March after just three months of dating, with Sheridan popping the question on stage during the first night of the Adelaide Fringe Festival back in March.

In May, Sheridan suffered a personal tragedy when their father Denis died of cancer aged 74. The following month, Sheridan came out as non-binary in an Instagram post while promoting their cover story with Roberts for DNA men’s magazine.

Sheridan also detailed their whirlwind year after coming out as bisexual last year.

“As you know, a year ago I came out as a human, two weeks later (I) got cancelled, then in the darkness found light in Kurt,” they wrote.
