Gwyneth Paltrow reveals sad secret reason she quit Hollywood

It’s no secret Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow has all but turned her back on acting. Now she reveals the “really rough” reason why.

It’s no secret that Gwyneth Paltrow has mostly moved on from acting in favour of her lifestyle brand Goop, but she now says it’s partly because of Harvey Weinstein.

“And, and again, like this wasn’t conscious at the time, but I started to feel, and, you know, frankly, I think part of my, part of the shine of acting wore off, you know, being in such intense public scrutiny, being a kid who’s like living every break-up on every headline,” Paltrow, 48, said on SiriusXM’s Quarantined with Bruce.

“So if you compound those things with the fact that like, you know, to be totally candid, I had a really rough boss for most of my movie career at Miramax,” she added.

Weinstein, 68, co-founded Miramax with his brother in 1979 and ran it until 2005, when he founded The Weinstein Company. Under the Miramax banner, Paltrow starred in Emma and won the Oscar for Best Actress in 1999 for her role in Shakespeare in Love.

Paltrow, who accused Weinstein of sexually harassing her in a hotel room, is credited with helping the New York Times bring down the former Hollywood kingpin, who was sentenced to 23 years behind bars.

“I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified,” she told the Times in a 2017 piece.

In March 2019, Paltrow clarified that she wasn’t retiring from acting.

“What I say is Goop is my full-time passion, and being the founder and CEO of Goop is what I do all day every day, and occasionally when something is the right thing and it works out around my children and my Goop life, I’m able to participate,” she said on the Today show.

“I think I’m just not focused on full-time acting right now.”

Paltrow has opened up about her shocking experience with disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein in a 2018 New York Times interview, describing their working relationship as “abusive”.

“The one time that Harvey propositioned me was really almost the least of it in terms of how onerous that relationship was, and it was very quid pro quo and punitive,” she said.

“And I always felt like I was on thin ice, and he could be truly horrible and mean and then be incredibly generous. It was kind of like a classic abusive relationship.”

According to the actress, she was summoned to his hotel room for a meeting after being hired to star in the adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. During the meeting, she claimed he suggested they head to the bedroom for a massage.

“I was a kid, I was signed up, I was petrified,” Paltrow said, revealing that she’d told then-boyfriend Brad Pitt about what happened, and that he’d warned Weinstein never to touch her again.

The Times also revealed that Weinstein told women he’d slept with Paltrow in a bid to coerce them into having sex with him, citing multiple sources.

One woman, who accused Weinstein of sexually assaulting her in 2004, claimed that he kept a framed photo of Paltrow in his bedroom. Another who alleged that Weinstein sexually harassed her in 2000 said that Weinstein told her he’d been intimate with Paltrow and other stars.

“He’s not the first person to lie about sleeping with someone,” Paltrow said. “But he used the lie as an assault weapon.”
