Following the result, Australian actress Fisher took to social media to blast those who opted to vote against the proposition.

Fisher shared a picture of a news article on Instagram and captioned the post: “Day of shame for Australia”.

Her post proved to be incredibly divisive among her followers, with many rushing to echo her sentiment and express their shock and disappointment at the result.

“Absolutely ridiculous. So disappointed with our country today,” complained one follower. Another agreed, adding: “Very sad that First Nation people couldn’t have their voice, mistreated for over 250 years it should be a right to have a voice not a privilege..”.

But others expressed their anger at Fisher’s post and hit back at the actress in the comments.

One angry follower replied: “Unfollowing, respect the decision of the people that actually live here.”

Another added: “A day where we stood as one against the Government & their BS lies of something they were not transparent on and showed no info of what would happen after.”

Following the result, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement that the outcome would “not divide” the country.

“This moment of disagreement does not define us, and it will not divide us, we are not Yes voters or No voters, we are all Australians,” he said.

“And it is as Australians together, that we must take our country beyond this debate, without forgetting why we had it in the first place.

“Too often in the life of our nation, the disadvantage confronting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people has been relegated to the margins, this referendum and my government has put it right at the centre.”
