Aussie A-lister Chris Hemsworth marked a milestone birthday this week – but it seems he celebrated by enjoying a few of life’s simple pleasures.

Hemsworth turned 40 on Friday and was spotted that morning with younger brother Liam, heading out for a morning surf in Byron Bay.

Also with them was surfer Owen Wright, who was seen gifting the brothers a copy of his autobiography Against The Water.

While Hemsworth and wife Elsa Pataky love a good party – they were recently seen on the Greek island of Mykonos, living it up with an A-list crew that included Matt Damon and wife Luciana Barroso, – it seems that, so far at least, the Thor actor’s 40th birthday celebrations have been low-key.

“Thank you for all the birthday wishes! Another lap around sun and still goin strong!” Hemsworth wrote on social media yesterday, alongside a photo of himself with not one but two birthday cakes.

“I can safely say not a single piece of cake made it through the night.”

That’s a lotta cake.

He also shared an adorable homemade birthday card from his 11-year-old daughter India, which Hemsworth declared on social media was perhaps his “favourite birthday card yet”.

Inside, young India wrote “I love you more than enything (sic) and I love you times” – followed by multiple infinity symbols.

Meanwhile, Hemsworth recently sat down for a lengthy feature with British GQ, discussing his decade-long career as one of Hollywood’s most bankable big screen stars.

In the feature, Hemsworth reveals he is currently “unemployed”, having spent all of 2023 at home in Byron Bay surfing, dropping his three children to school, spending time with wife Pataky and doing some intense soul-searching following recent setbacks.

He also revealed he is mourning the loss of his beloved grandfather, who died recently after suffering from Alzheimer’s.

As he approached his 40th, he said that, “the reality of ‘I’m not going to be here forever’ is sinking in’.

“I’ve just been enjoying downtime,” he added, describing his current work situation as “unemployed”.

“I find most of your problems are created through boredom, when you’re sitting around and you have nothing else to think about except, ‘Oh, what can I pick apart here, what else can I assess and criticise within myself?’

“All of a sudden [now that he’s having a break], there’s a lot of questions that I probably haven’t answered … I’ve been conveniently distracted and all of a sudden it’s like, ‘Oh, let’s look a little deeper’.

“Nothing overly dramatic … ‘Who am I? What am I doing? What’s my contribution? Is what I’m doing of value?’”
