Alex Stefanovic, 70, opened up about a long-standing rift in the family, telling New Idea magazine that he fell out with his boys, Karl and Pete, 25 years ago.

“They walked away from me ... following my divorce from their mother,” he said.

“We’ve barely spoken since. That’s the reality.”

Alex told the magazine that Karl and Pete “could not give a damn about me” and claimed the Channel Nine personalities are embarrassed by him because he’s balding, overweight and has no money.

Despite saying he’s “barely spoken” to Karl in 25 years, Alex said he had been well aware his son was struggling with his relationship to Cassandra Thorburn, whom Karl split from last year after 21 years of marriage.

“From what I know, it was a strained marriage and had been for a long time,” Alex told New Idea.

“Karl came to see me in the early 2000s and said: ‘Marriage is too hard, it’s all over.’ He was going to move in with me, but he returned and they reconciled.”

Alex was invited to and did attend Pete’s wedding to Sylvia Jeffreys last month, but claimed he was treated so poorly on the day that he’ll never see either of his famous sons ever again.

“None of the boys gave me any time at the wedding,” he said.

“I knew I had to go, perform my duty, but after that I was done ... That wedding would be the last time I see my boys ... After the wedding I thought, ‘no more, no more’. How many times can your heart be broken?”

Karl has rarely spoken about his dad in interviews but his former Today show offsider, Ben Fordham, told the SMH in 2011 that, “For Karl, his mum and dad going their separate ways was a game changer”.

Fordham said it was during a trip to London in 2011 that Karl finally opened up to him.

“After knowing him for years and years, he finally spilt the beans about his demons … It wasn’t a picture-perfect family history,” Fordham said.

Karl Stefanovic is now dating Jasmine Yarbrough.
