Australian actor Simon Baker has opened up about why he’s never actually watched his biggest film in a candid new interview with Esquire Australia.

Baker, 55, landed his biggest Hollywood role yet in 2006 when he appeared in the smash hit The Devil Wears Prada. He played a womanising journalist by the name of Christian Thompson, both an antagonist and potential love interest for Anne Hathaway’s lead character in the film.

The Devil Wears Prada was a runaway hit, ending 2006 as the 12th highest-grossing film of the year worldwide.

But Baker himself never watched his biggest movie – for an, ahem, eyebrow-raising reason. He told Esquire Australia that he opted out of seeing the film after a friend’s wife watched it and had one piece of feedback for him: “What the f**k is going on with your eyebrows in that movie?”

She told him they “just had like their own thing going on.”

While Baker conceded it was “absurdly vulnerable and vain” of him, he decided then and there that he never wanted to see the film.

Now, Baker’s friend’s wife isn’t the only person to raise the topic of his … unusual eyebrows in The Devil Wears Prada. Baker’s scenes in the film have occasionally been a topic of discussion on social media over the years, as viewers remarked on his fluffy, blonde brows.

One person on X tweeted in 2023 that when rewatching the film they were again struck by the “strangeness of Simon Baker’s two-tone eyebrows.”

“Simon Baker is actually quite an attractive man, I don’t know what they did to his eyebrows in Devil Wears Prada to make him look weird,” tweeted another person in 2020.

In 2021, another viewer declared his eyebrows to be “the actual villain” of the film.

“Simon Baker’s eyebrows in The Devil Wears Prada … what happened?” another asked in 2020.

So what did happen? It seems not even Baker himself was sure – he wasn’t aware his eyebrows looked unusual during filming – so he asked a friend who’d seen the film for their opinion.

“I said, ‘What’s going on with my eyebrows? Someone said something about my eyebrows’. And she goes, ‘Oh, they’re just surfy eyebrows. They’re sun-bleached … they just probably needed a bit of a trim’. So that calmed me a little bit. But I’m like, you know what? I feel uncomfortable around it. I don’t need to see it.”

And almost 20 years later, despite acknowledging that The Devil Wears Prada is “such a beloved movie,” Baker says he still has no plans to watch it – and “it was born out of this f**king eyebrow comment.”
