Stars hit the red carpet for MTV Video Music Awards

THERE’S something very strange going on this year at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Taylor Swift drops new music video at the VMA's

THE MTV Video Music Awards have always attracted the most outrageous outfits on the red carpet, but something weird has happened this year.

It’s become a (relatively) classy affair.

In fact, the same event that once delivered Miley Cyrus’ metallic belt getup and Lady Gaga’s dress made of actual meat (for crying out loud) has become a sea of cocktail outfits.

This year’s host Katy Perry led the way, arriving at The Forum in Los Angeles in an elegant white one-shouldered gown, featuring a fairly modest cleavage cut-out.

Of course, all anyone wanted to know was whether or not her long-time nemesis Taylor Swift would be joining her on stage - but Perry wasn’t giving anything away on the red carpet, instead gushing during interviews about her planned performance of Swish Swish with Nicki Minaj.

Lorde also ditched her trademark edgy look for the occasion, looking incredibly glamorous in a pastel dress made up of tulle and feathers as she posed for the cameras.

High School Musical alum Vanessa Hudgens was right on trend with this year’s dress code, wearing a lengthy red gown featuring plenty of ruffles and large sheer panels.

Meanwhile, supermodel Heidi Klum was more daring, flashing a fair bit of flesh in a full-length bejewelled gold gown designed by Peter Dundas, it was still an outfit that could have passed as Oscars attire.

Demi Lovato — fresh from her performance at last night’s Mayweather/McGregor megafight in Las Vegas — was clad in a Zuhair Murad outfit, channelling MC Hammer with sequined harem pants.

She paired it with a long-sleeve lace top which threatened to deliver a wardrobe malfunction at any moment.

Meanwhile, Ed Sheeran arrived with Jennie Pegouskie (who starred in the video for his hit song Shape Of You) looking like he was headed to an entirely different event.

Actually, he looked like that younger sibling who’s parents have made him pose with their big sister before she goes to her Year 10 Formal.

However, (thankfully) a few celebrities stuck with the traditional theme of truly outrageous fashion.

Paris Jackson was among the most bizarrely dressed in a particularly unique sheer gown - paired with bike shorts and a crop top.

The transparent olive-green Dior dress featured artistic panels at the bottom, with floral embroidery across the bust.

To protect her modesty, Jackson wore a white Christian Dior crop and shorts set.

Noah Cyrus also earned a nod in the questionable fashion stakes, arriving with no pants, too much jumper, and what appeared to be Julia Roberts’ boots out of Pretty Woman.

(It’s entirely likely that the youngest Cyrus star is just filling the gaping hole left by her sister Miley’s new-found conservatism).

Hip hop artist Lizzo turned up as a bride, which would be entirely weird at a regular Hollywood event, but which in this instance I prefer to imagine may have been a homage to Britney Spears circa 2003.

If that’s the case - well played, Lizzo. (If not, it’s super weird).
