Live MTV VMAs: Miley Cyrus, Bella Hadid stun in sheer outfits

Supermodel Bella Hadid has left very little to the imagination at the MTV Video Music Awards in a strikingly sheer ensemble.

MTV VMAs: Lady Gaga takes over

And that's a wrap for the MTV Video Music Awards.

Lady Gaga cleaned up most of the notable awards of the evening, including Best Artist, while Miley Cyrus stole the show with an iconic performance which saw her strip down and straddle a giant wrecking ball.

Supermodel Bella Hadid was the red carpet highlight in a sheer outfit with an extremely daring pantsuit, while Best New Artist winner Doja Cat looked gorgeous in a plunging red gown.

There were some big changes made to the 2020 VMAs, which were held in New York today. While elements of the show were live, some performances, award presentations and red carpet interviews had been pre-recorded.

Updates

Light-up crotches were a thing

Honourable mention must go to the Black Eyed Peas' light-up crotches during their performance. Thank you, Wil.i.am, for bringing us this new advance in genital fluorescence:

Video of the Year goes to...

The night's final award, goes to The Weeknd (sorry, Gaga). The softly-spoken singer kept it brief: "Hard to celebrate, so I'm going to say Justice for Jacob Blake, Justice for Breonna Taylor."

And, with a closing performance from the Black Eyed Peas (oh hey 2005!), we're done. The first major award show of the coronavirus era is finished – now we just cross our fingers that everyone we saw on screen today doesn't come down with the 'rona in a week.

Yet another big award for Gaga

Gaga gets the 'Tricon Award' for her more than a decade as a massive pop performer.

Another outfit and a stirring speech about how art will triumph over the current difficult global conditions. "I might sound like a broken record, but wear a mask," she told viewers.

Bella Hadid's outrageous outfit

It's been an unusual red carpet to keep track of this year, with celeb photos still filtering in long after the ceremony got underway. We thought Miley had the wildest red carpet outfit – but we hadn't seen model Bella Hadid, who's given her a run for her money in this see-through ensemble:

Gaga wins Artist of the Year

Gaga's really cleaning up – coincidentally, she seems to be one of the only artists who's actually shown up tonight. Here she is in a whole new mask and outfit:

Lady Gaga, ladies and gentleman

The world's most extra performer Lady Gaga has stormed the stage with a dramatic performance of 911, which saw her propel down a fire pole before breaking out in dance.

She was sporting another face mask change, this time it resembled more of a gas mask.

Gaga was then joined by Ariana Grande for an electrifying performance of their hit, Rain On Me.

Gaga capped off the set with an acoustic rendition of Stupid Love on the piano, before finishing the song with a rave. One word, epic. Watch the performance in full below:

BTS bring the chorey

South Korean boy band – and global phenomenon – BTS bring their trademark perfect choreography to a performance of their latest hit single, Dynamite.

Gaga wins Best Song

Another award for Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande's Rain On Me – and a brand new mask and outfit for Gaga as she returns to the stage to accept it:

Miley reunites with a wrecking ball

Seven years since her iconic music video, Cyrus has came in like a wrecking ball yet again during an edgy performance of her new single, Midnight Sky.

The singer strutted up a staircase before stripping off her dress and straddling a giant disco ball.

This is true nostalgia.

Gaga's COVID-ready outfit

Lady Gaga accepts the night's first award for her Ariana Grande collabo Rain On Me – and delivers her acceptance speech from behind a fashionable pink mask:
