SAG Awards 2022: House of Gucci, Don’t Look Up and King Richard up for top gong
The 2022 SAG nominees have been announced, with the awards show generally proving to be a clear predictor for the upcoming Oscars.
Is Don’t Look Up a frontrunner for an Oscar? Is Lady Gaga on the road to victory and will she face off against Nicole Kidman?
The Screen Actors Guild Awards revealed its nominees ahead of the 2022 show, which will be held on February 28, the New York Post reports.
In film, nominees for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture included Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, House of Gucci and King Richard, with Golden Globe winner The Power of the Dog notably absent.
Lady Gaga scored a nod for outstanding performance by a female actor in a leading role – a surprise given harsh critics’ reviews – up against Jessica Chastain, Olivia Colman, Jennifer Hudson and Nicole Kidman in that category.
Meanwhile, Javier Bardem, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield, Will Smith and Denzel Washington will compete for the outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role SAG Award.
Television will see several co-stars battle for the win, such as Succession stars Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong – with all three nominated for outstanding performance by a male actor in a drama series (along with Billy Crudup and Lee Jung-jae).
The hit HBO show was also nominated for outstanding performance by an ensemble in a drama series against The Handmaid’s Tale, The Morning Show, Squid Game and Yellowstone.
Succession star Sarah Snook will face off against The Morning Show co-stars Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon along with Jung Ho-yeon and Elisabeth Moss in what will undoubtedly be a tight race for best actress in a drama series.
The show will take place from the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California – a change in venue for the first time since 1997 after last year’s postponed, pre-taped ceremony.
After a nearly invisible Golden Globes held strictly on Twitter, the SAGs might have just upped itself a notch in importance – mainly for celebs looking to get out of the house and campaign ahead of the Academy Awards on March 27.
The SAGs have proved to be quite the reliable predictor for the Oscars each year, too, so these nominees might feel deja vu when the Oscars announce their nominees on February 8.
The SAGs are also set to honour Dame Helen Mirren with the 2021 SAG Life Achievement Award.
Here’s the full list of nominees for the 2022 SAG Awards.
