Tina Fey, Amy Poehler trash HFPA amid diversity scandal
Amy Poehler and Tina Fey savaged the Golden Globes voting body in a searing opening monologue.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler have trashed the voting body behind the Golden Globes during this year’s awards show.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association – the group of people who nominate and select winners for the annual Globes – came under fire at the weekend for lack of diversity after a Los Angeles Times report found there were no black members currently in the organisation.
The HFPA confirmed this, but claimed it’s an issue they’re “committed to addressing”.
In their opening monologue as co-hosts of the ceremony, Fey began: “The HFPA is made up of around 90 international – no black – journalists who attend movie junkets each year in search of a better life,” she joked. “So, let’s see what these European weirdos nominated this year.”
Poehler added: “Everybody is understandably upset at the HFPA and their choices. A lot of flashy garbage got nominated, but that happens. That’s it’s thing. A number of black actors and black projects got overlooked.”
Fey then said that awards shows were “stupid”, before saying: “The point is, even with stupid things, inclusivity is important.
“And there are no black members of the Hollywood Foreign Press. I realised, HFPA, maybe you guys didn’t get the memo because your workplace is the back booth of a French McDonald’s. You gotta change that. So, here’s to changing it.”

The comedic duo also called out Australian singer Sia’s controversial – yet heavily nominated – autism-themed film Music, which Fey said was nominated for“for Biggest Flopparooni.”
It comes as were some bizarre inclusions in the Globes nominations, perhaps none more so than Netflix series Emily In Paris.
The brilliant HBO seriesI May Destroy You, led and written by Michaela Coel, was a notable omission.
In a statement to the Times, an HFPA spokesperson said, “We understand that we need to bring in black members, as well as members from other under-represented backgrounds, and we will immediately work to implement an action plan to achieve these goals as soon as possible.”
Stars including Olivia Wilde, Ellen Pompeo, Alyssa Milano, America Ferrera, Lupita Nyong’o, Shonda Rhimes, Kerry Washington and Busy Philipps have all been sharing social media posts today to take a stand against the HFPA.

I support and congratulate all the nominees, but the HFPA needs to change in meaningful ways. Cosmetic fixes are not enough. #TimesUpGlobes

“Truly absurd. I support and celebrate all the GG nominees, and their hard work for their craft, but when it comes to this institution, it’s time for the HFPA to commit to some deep, structural evolution,” Wilde posted on Instagram, sharing the #timesupglobes image of a cracked award.
