Golden Globes 2021 live updates: Winners, speeches and best moments

Sacha Baron Cohen took no prisoners in a pair of pointed speeches at today's Golden Globes, as Aussie wife Isla Fisher watched on.

Virtual Golden Globes 2021 recap: Wins, bloopers & shocks

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey kicked off today's Golden Globes by tackling the growing controversy surrounding the award show head-on.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association - the mysterious organisation comprising only 87 members who nominate and select Golden Globes winners each year - has come under fire in the past week for a lack of diversity after a bombshell report found there were no black members currently in the organisation.

And the elephant in the room was addressed several times during the ceremony, with the hosts, some presenters and even several winners calling out HFPA's lack of diversity.

And at times it was a bumpy night: There were technical hitches, bizarre speeches and more than a few suspiciously boozed-up celebs. Here's how it all unfolded...

Updates

That's it from me...

Thanks for joining me for this year's Golden Globes. An in the wise words of Jane Fonda as she accepted her lifetime achievement award today: "Happy birthday, Tommy Tune!"

How to watch this year's nominated movies

This year more than ever, it's not as easy as heading to your local cinema to see the movies nominated across today's big categories. Some films highlighted at today's Golden Globes have been released in cinemas here in Australia, but others are available on across streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and more. Find out where you can track down each film.

Kaley Cuoco drowns her sorrows

The best thing about this year's awards being home-based: If you lose in your category, you can immediately get stuck into the booze and junk food, as The Flight Attendant star Kaley Cuoco demonstrates in this Insta pic:

The final award goes to....

Michael Douglas and wife Catherine Zeta-Jones present the night's final award, Best Motion Picture – Drama. It goes to the stunning Nomadland, and director Chloé Zhao is "speechless."

Thank goodness for that, because the producers start playing her off with wind-up music within about 15 seconds of her speech starting. What an ending!

Sacha's pointed acceptance speeches

Accepting the Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy award for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, Sacha Baron Cohen began with a pointed "thank you to the all-white Hollywood Foreign Press."

He also paid tribute to the breakout star of the film – no, not co-star Maria Bakalova, but Republican politician Rudy Giuliani, who unwittingly starred in the film's most shocking hidden camera segment.

He ended by thanking his "incredibly patient" wife, Aussie actress Isla Fisher, "who has put up with all my madness."

Minutes later, Baron Cohen wins his second award, for Best Actor in a Comedy. "Donald Trump is contesting the result – he's saying a lot of dead people voted, which is a terrible thing to say about the Hollywood Foreign Press Association."

Chadwick's posthumous award

Ooft. Chadwick Boseman posthumously wins the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama for his work in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

His widow Taylor Simone Ledward weeps as she accepts the award on his behalf, offering a few words of the speech he would have given if he were still alive.

"I don't have his words, but we have to take all the moments to thank the people we love. I'm taking this moment to do exactly that," she says.

It's an emotional moment – presenter Renee Zellweger is among those left in tears:

Nicole Kidman's rare glimpse of family

Nicole Kidman's category is up, for her starring role in The Undoing – and the usually very private star is on camera with husband Keith Urban and their two daughters, Sunday and Faith:

But despite the family support, it's not Nic's night – she loses the award for Best Actress in an Anthology Series, Limited Series, or TV Movie to Anya Taylor-Joy for the Netflix hit The Queen’s Gambit.

Winner Jodie Foster's sweet moment

Jodie Foster wins the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture award for The Mauritanian. She's stunned – and she's the picture of domesic bliss, dialling in from home with wife Alexandra Hedison and their dog, all curled up on the couch:

She gives her wife a big kiss as their friends are heard cheering from a room downstairs.

It's official: It's a "mess"

Almost two hours in, Tina and Amy gleefully round up the night's messiest moments so far: Don Cheadle stepping in to wind up Jason Sudeikis. Jason's hoodie, which Tina quips viewers can buy themselves from the fashion section of the Golden Globes website.

And of course presenter Tracy Morgan's mispronunciation of the Pixar movie Soul as "SAW-EL", an oh-so-Tracy moment that his old 30 Rock co-star Tina says made her feel like she was home.
