All the hits and misses from the 6th annual AACTA Awards red carpet

JESS Mauboy hasn’t had a lot of luck at red carpets. At the AACTA Awards, Kerri-Anne Kennerley showed her how it’s done.

"Which iconic Australian TV show or film do you wish you could have been in?" News.com.au on the AACTA Awards red carpet.

THE clouds rolled over the red carpet at the 6th annual AACTA Awards in Sydney on Wednesday, but that didn’t stop the stars of Australian film from dressing up on the sweaty summer afternoon.

Despite a bunch of sausages rushing the red carpet, A-listers including Isla Fischer, Rose Byrne and Mel Gibson all rolled up to celebrate the local film industry’s night of nights — the event dubbed with an acronym that no one really understands.

But it wasn’t all about sausages and movies. Jessica Mauboy was one of the first to roll up, and she took things to a new level. It wasn’t outstanding — but it also wasn’t her worst.

You see, Jess hasn’t been having a lot of luck with her wardrobe lately. Just two weeks ago, her outfit at the ARIA Awards was a mess of sleeves and pattern and satin. That outfit marked the one year anniversary from the 2015 ARIA Awards, where she wore a weird, oversized grey suit with sleeves.

While it seems Jess just comes with sleeves these days and it’s something we’re all going to have to get used to, her dress at this year’s AACTA Awards is a total improvement. Yes the fit’s off. But the colour’s nice and she showed some boob.

And then Kerri-Anne Kennerley rocked up and showed her how it’s done.

KAK looked sexy. We knew it. Jess Mauboy knew it. And Kerri-Anne herself knew it. You can see it in her eyes. The 63-year-old showed off her slammin’ bod in a figure-hugging, high-necked blue gown.

Isla Fisher brought some Hollywood glam back home. The 40-year-old looked sleek and sexy in a black halter-top Alex Perry gown.

Joined by her husband Sacha Baron Cohen, folks were expecting at least a small stunt from the funnyman. But Fisher assured us he would be on his best behaviour.

“Last time I was on a red carpet with him, he was in his underwear, so this is an improvement,” she told news.com.au.

Another expat in town for the event is Rose Byrne. The new mum was running on a tight schedule and zipped across town to present at the event before hitting the stage in a play at the Sydney Theatre Company later in the night. She showed off her slim frame in a flirty floral frock.

Jessica Marais threw caution to the wind and went experimental.

The outfit is basically three different dresses on top of each other, with a Madonna cone bra thing happening up top. Chunky goth boots down below. Bold colours. Most people will hate it. I think it’s kinda cool. If the top dress was about 30cm longer and covered that other fabric at the bottom, it’d be a winner.

In what has to be the biggest coincidence at a formal event, Danielle Cormack was wearing the same chunky heeled goth shoes Jessica Marais is wearing.

Another style choice sure to divide opinions was served up by A Place To Call Home’s Marta Dusseldorp.

The black frock featured a graphic print comprised of sequins, swirls, a parrot and a baby cupid.

Looking cool in Steven Khalil is Natalie Bassingthwaighte. The actress went bold in the white, black and navy number, which was equal parts chic and edgy.

Silvia Colloca decided to use her frock to make a rather big announcement. The TV chef’s strapless, figuring-hugging dress - complete with thigh high split and puffy sleeves - showed off a rather noticable bump. And while she says she didn’t want to reveal the news on the red carpet, the Italian confirmed to News Corp she’s expecting her third child with husband Richard Roxburgh.

Dami Im and Miranda Tapsel wore the pants on the night. The singer and the Love Child star both rocked black trousers. While Tapsel completed her look with a sparkly and sheer top, Dami wore a fitted velvet jacket which showed off a hint of stomach.

Richie Strahan and Alex Nation were also there. They basically look like how they did in those Bachelor rose ceremonies.
