SOME of Australia’s biggest names in showbiz were upstaged by a sizzle of sausages as they made their way into the industry’s night of nights.

PROTESTERS dressed as sausages have crashed the red carpet at the 6th annual AACTA Awards in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon, chanting “end the sausage party!”.

As some of Australia’s A-list actors — including Mel Gibson, Isla Fisher and Rose Byrne — were preparing to walk the red carpet, a group of about a dozen females wrapped in brown fabric crashed the event in protest.

“End the sausage party! Stop the sausage party!” they chanted while handing out pamphlets. It’s assumed they were protesting gender inequality in the film industry rather than this year’s hit animated movie of the same name.

Once the group stormed the red carpet, they ran for security, ready to take them on.

“They were three sausages to a security guard and tried to take them down,” news.com.au’s Nick Bond, who was on the red carpet, said. “And they tried to drag them. They would sit on the ground and try to pull the security down with them.

“They were dressed like sausages but also looked like walnuts. They were handing out pamphlets but it doesn’t seem like anyone got one.”

Footage posted to Twitter shows security forcibly removing one of the girls from the carpet.

“Security got a handle on them ... they were giving as good as they got,” Bond said.
