Samsung’s next major product launch event, known as Unpacked, has just been confirmed for July 10. But, it isn’t the brand’s new foldable smartphones that are causing a stir ahead of it.
While the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 are expected to be revealed next month, it’s a long awaited new wearable that’s being tipped to be Samsung’s pièce de résistance.
The Galaxy Ring was first teased at this year’s Galaxy Unpacked.
At the end of the event, a shiny, metal ring flashed up briefly on the screen, with a Samsung representative announcing the health and wellness device is “here to change the shape of future health like only Samsung can.”
The Galaxy Ring was subsequently unveiled to the public during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) exhibition in February, where it was revealed the device would be available in nine different sizes (ring sizes 5 to 13) and three colour options: black, silver, and gold.
However, the most anticipated detail has now been revealed through an unlikely source.
A lawsuit, pre-emptively filed by Samsung against Finnish health tech company Oura, has revealed the Galaxy Ring is set to arrive in the US “in or around August of this year”.
The suit alleges that Oura has previously used its patent portfolio to file suits against competitors based on “features common to virtually all smart rings”. It also lists other cases where Oura has sued competitors, such as Ultrahuman, RingConn and Circular “as soon as, or even before, they entered the U.S. market”.
This has caused the company’s Oura Ring to be virtually uncontested in the smart ring market, making Samsung’s determination to throw its hat in the ring all the more interesting.
The finger-based wearable is expected to have a range of health-monitoring features, with heart rate, sleep monitoring and an ECG sensor all potentially in the cards.
Samsung has also promised “leading sensor-technology” and “comfortable 24/7 wear health tracking”, and confirmed the Galaxy Ring is meant to complement its smartwatch range rather than replace it.
“With Galaxy Ring, we are offering an all-new and simplified way to help people better manage their health, leveraging Samsung’s established leadership in health, along with our open-collaboration philosophy with industry experts and leading organisations,” Samsung said.
Australian availability for the Galaxy Ring is yet to be announced.
What else could be revealed at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024?
The second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year always brings new generations of the Galaxy Z Fold and Galaxy Z Flip smartphones. This year is expected to be no different, with the arrival of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 all but confirmed by leaks and rumours.
We also typically see a range of smartwatches released alongside Samsung’s foldables, so it’s highly likely the Galaxy Watch7 line will make its appearance. Samsung is also expected to launch its first Ultra smartwatch this year, though it’s currently unclear if this premium version will also be part of the Watch7 line. Either way, its announcement at Unpacked is looking like a sure bet.
Finally, with the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro turning two this year, the announcement of the Galaxy Buds 3 Pro is another possibility.
When is Samsung Galaxy Unpacked July 2024?
Samsung has confirmed that its next Galaxy Unpacked event is set for July 10.
When will pre-orders drop for the Galaxy Ring and Galaxy Z Fold & Flip 6 series?
If previous Unpacked events are anything to go by, pre-orders for the new devices should be available immediately after the announcements. Products are then likely to ship in August of this year.
