This month, we’re kicking things off with Striking Distance Studio’s The Callisto Protocol. The survival horror, third-person shooter places you 300 years in the future in a maximum-security prison on Jupiter’s moon, Callisto. Things take a nightmarish turn when your fellow inmates start to warp into monstrous creatures, leading you to attempt a nailbiting escape and uncover the truth behind Callisto.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns
Release date: December 2, 2022

Marvel’s greatest heroes will battle their biggest threat yet in Firaxis Games’ long-awaited Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The turn-based tactical RPG will centre around the Hunter (aka, you) and iconic Marvel heroes from The Avengers, X-Men and more as you go head-to-head with the demonic forces of Lilith and the elder god Chthon. We have been promised a “darker side of Marvel” for this one, so parents may want to check it out ahead of time.

Need for Speed: Unbound
Release date: December 2, 2022

The sequel to 2019’s Need For Speed: Heat, Need For Speed: Unbound is set to step things up and take the franchise in a whole new direction. Offering a whopping 10,000 customisation options, Unbound will see the deepest level of customisation in a NFS game yet, with complete conversions, new turbofans and new rims just a few of the available options. There’s also separate single and multiplayer campaigns and a cool new art style, giving rev heads plenty to be excited about. We can almost smell the burning rubber from here.

Cuphead
Release date: December 6, 2022

Following the arrival of Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course earlier this year, the original Cuphead game is finally getting a physical release. If you aren’t already familiar with the popular 2D shooter game, get ready for brutally challenging gameplay, whimsical artwork and a hellishly good time. A Collector’s Edition is also in the works, though we won’t be seeing it until Q1 2023.

Kukoos – Lost Pets
Release date: December 6, 2022

If you’re looking for a game to keep the kids entertained this summer, look no further than Kukoos – Lost Pets. The charming 3D platformer follows cutesy new characters, the Kukoos, as they attempt to find and regain control over their pets after an experiment in obedience backfires. Journey solo or with up to three friends and adventure though a colourful universe, battling bosses, finding unique collectables and solving ancient puzzles as you go.
Kukoos – Lost Pets arrives first on Nintendo Switch, PS4 and PC, with releases for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One due out in 2023.

Hello Neighbor 2
Release date: December 6, 2022

If you’ve ever wanted to try your hand at investigative journalism, Hello Neighbor 2 is for you. The family-friendly stealth horror game will have you sniffing out your creepy neighbours’ secrets after the disappearance of several kids in your town (including the original game’s protagonist). The sandbox puzzler also sees each of your neigbours controlled by advanced AIs that learn from your movements, so you’ll be met with new challenges each time you play.

Dragon Quest Treasures

Exploring the childhoods of siblings Mia and Erik from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, Dragon Quest Treasures promises an all-new action RPG adventure. After encountering a pair of otherworldly creatures, you’ll be transported to the mysterious Draconia where you’ll explore, battle and seek out treasure with the help of your monster friends.

Choo-Choo Charles
Release date: December 10, 2022

Continuing this month’s horror theme, Choo-Choo Charles will scuttle onto screens on December 10. Set in an old train on an open-world island, game developer Two Star Games describes the premise simply as, “Blood, gore, and people being eaten alive by a spider train.” You’ll never look at Thomas The Tank Engine the same way again.

High On Life
Release date: December 13, 2022

Made by the creators of Rick and Morty, High on Life is a first-person shooter with all the quirks and dark humour you would expect from Roiland. After aliens invade Earth and start getting high off humans, you, your high-school degree education and a team of foul-mouthed talking guns (including one that sounds just like Morty) will attempt to take out their drug cartel. Despite the humour, there’s a surprising amount of depth to both the combat and the gameplay here, making it one to add to your wishlist.

Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion
Release date: December 13, 2022

A remaster of the popular prequel to Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion features HD remastered graphics, fully voiced dialogue, new soundtrack arrangements and updated combat systems. Players control young warrior and aspiring hero, Zack Fair, as he sets out to find a missing 1st Class operative soldier. Along the way, you’ll discover dark secrets, battle monsters and bump into a number of favourite characters from the Final Fantasy VII franchise, including Cloud, Sephiroth and Aerith.

Disney Speedstorm
Release date: TBC 2022

While Gameloft is remaining tight-lipped on a release date, we’re hoping to see Disney Speedstorm race onto our screens sooner, rather than later. The free to download arcade racer will see your favourite Disney and Pixar characters get behind the wheel in a Mario Kart-like game. Gameloft is also promising plenty of “fresh seasonal content” along with “new racers, new tracks and collectibles” that will drop into the game regularly.

The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum
Release date: TBC 2022

While we’re still unsure if The Lord Of The Rings: Gollum will release this year or next, we’re keen to see what’s in store for our favourite riddle-loving lurker. Set after Gollum is captured and held in Barad-dûr, the story-driven action-adventure requires you to climb, leap and grapple your way out of danger as you seek out your Precious. Rather than fight your dual personality, use it to your advantage by knowing when to be the social and cautious Sméagol and when to embrace the cunning and cruel Gollum.

Fire Emblem Engage is the next title in the long-running strategy series from Intelligent Systems – and, after the success of Fire Emblem: Three Houses, we’re expecting big things. Players will take on the role of Alear (also known as a Divine Dragon) to help stop a great evil that is about to reawaken and threaten the Continent of Elyos. Summoning heroes like Celica and Marth with the power of Emblem Rings, you’ll also be able to add their power to yours and inherit the weapons, skills and more of these battle-ready legends.

Forspoken
Release date: January 24, 2023

Luminous Production’s Forspoken is easily one of the more intriguing titles we’ll be seeing in early 2023. The single-player story follows the journey of Frey, a young woman who finds herself transported to the stunning, yet hostile land of Athia. Complete with powerful enemies, a magical talking cuff and fearsome dragons, the action RPG promises plenty of detailed magic and sprawling worlds to explore, putting it firmly on our wishlist.
Dead Space Remake
Release date: January 27, 2023

Sci-fi survival horror classic, Dead Space, will return rebuilt from the ground up next January. With improvements to visuals, audio and gameplay, developer Motive Electronic Arts has promised a “deeper, more immersive experience” that stays faithful to the vision of the original. A Digital Deluxe Edition will also be up for grabs, which will include the base game, three unique suits and two suit textures to ensure you look your best while outrunning the horrors that await you.

Dead Island 2

Expect plenty of dark humour and gore when Dambuster Studio’s Dead Island 2 launches next February. Taking place in LA, the first-person shooter provides plenty of zombie-afflicted foes to use as target practice as you work your way through the visceral and quirky adventure. With six different characters to choose from, you’ll also be able to customise the abilities of your slayer and try out an all new skill system.

Hogwarts Legacy

Octopath Traveler II

Skull & Bones
Release date: March 9, 2023

Ubisoft’s upcoming action-adventure, Skull & Bones, is one for all the Pirates of the Carribean fans out there. The open-world pirate game will see players chart their own destiny as they work their way from outcast scallywag to pirate kingpin. It will also have crossplay and cross-progression, so you can explore the seven seas with your closest crewmates.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Easily the biggest game announcement for 2023 so far is The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Announced during the last Nintendo Direct, the action adventure is the sequel to 2017’s critically acclaimed The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. While we don’t know too much about the storyline just yet, from the trailers it looks like we’ll be returning to Hyrule – only this time there’s a bunch of floating islands in the sky. We’re also expecting to see new weapons and new ways to travel and explore. If you’re really keen, you can already pre-order your copy below.
