For all their convenience, laptops do fall short in one vital area: ergonomics.

Whether you're working from a proper office desk or your kitchen table, constantly craning to look at your laptop screen can be a literal pain in the neck (and shoulders).

That's where a laptop stand can come in handy.

Not only will they elevate your laptop to eye level, combating the dreaded 'tech neck', but they'll also improve airflow to the base of your device, keeping your machine cool under pressure.

Some stands are designed to be typed on whether you’re sitting or standing, while others are simply made to elevate and tilt your laptop screen while you use an external keyboard and mouse to operate it.

Whatever option you’re looking for, we’ve rounded up a list of highly-rated options to suit below - like the Lamicall Adjustable Laptop Stand one reviewer said "transformed my work setup".

OUR TOP PICKS

EDITOR'S PICK OF THE BEST LAPTOP STANDS

Lamicall Adjustable Laptop Stand, $59.99 at Amazon Australia

Lamicall Adjustable Laptop Stand

What You Need To Know

With its reasonable price tag and range of height and angle adjustments, Lamicall’s Adjustable Laptop Stand is our top pick for most people. Made with aluminium alloy and a generously sized top tray plate, the stand is nice and sturdy and can hold devices all the way up to 17-inches.

It comes with two long rubber grips on the tray to hold your laptop in place, and a wide ventilation design that should align with the cooling fans on your laptop to prevent your device from overheating. The stand design is also fully collapsible, making it a portable option you can pack up and take with you whenever you’re travelling for work.

If you don’t like using an external keyboard, typing directly on the stand at lower heights is nice and stable, though typing at maximum height will result in a bit of bouncing around.

One five-star reviewer on Amazon Australia called the Lamicall stand a "valuable addition for anyone looking to improve their workspace ergonomics.

"This adjustable laptop stand has transformed my work setup, offering both versatility and ergonomic benefits.

"It promotes better posture and enhances the overall computing experience, making it a worthwhile investment for both work and leisure."

Both the height and angle of the LSX3 are able to be adjusted quickly, making it easy to find the most comfortable position for your setup. The durable design meanwhile features a U-shaped base that allows maximum air flow to the bottom of the laptop to prevent overheating.

Unlike some other options on this list, the LSX3 isn’t portable and also comes unassembled, so it is better suited to those who work in the one place, rather than to hybrid workers.

One reviewer on Amazon, who rated the stand five out of five, said: "my laptop was running hot and now after using this stand I don't hear the fan anymore.

"The build quality is excellent - it's not flimsy or bouncy. It's very stylish and fits in with all decor".

While it is marketed for Macbooks, I've been using Twelve South's Curve Stand with my Dell laptop for close to a year without issue. WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A LAPTOP STAND

When choosing laptop stands to include in our list, we evaluated several factors:

Build quality: We only included models that reviewers rated well for their sturdiness.

Adjustability: We considered a variety of models for different user needs, and included models that can be adjusted for height or collapsed for travel purposes.

Size and weight: Laptop stands shouldn't be overly heavy, so we looked for options that are relatively light and compact.

Cable management: We tried to include options with space at the back of the stand for cables and cords to run through.

Price: We weighed up the above criteria against the price of each model, and rival models, to try and find the best value option in each category.

HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS

Our team of experienced writers spend hours researching products to include in articles. We find out what factors make a good product by talking to experts, reviewing test results and analysing thousands of customer reviews.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are laptop stands necessary?

Depending on what you're desk setup is like and how long you're using your laptop for, a stand may not be necessary. However, they do allow your laptop to be placed in a more ergonomic position, and can also help keep your laptop cooler, making them a worthwhile investment for many.

Do cooling laptop stands work?

Yes, they can help provide better air circulation under your laptop where most of the processing cicuitry is located, keeping your laptop cooler.

What should I look for in a laptop stand?

Choosing the right laptop stand for your needs largely comes down to deciding what kind of working environment you want to create. If you’re looking for a stand as part of a permanent home or office setup, you may want to invest in a more solid option - or even a vertical stand if you want to work from external monitors instead. Hybrid workers, on the other hand, will want to look for a portable stand that can be collapsed.

You’ll also want to consider how  you work. For instance, if you work sitting down all day, a basic laptop stand should suit your needs. If you spend large portions of your working day standing though, you’ll likely want a stand with a wider range of height options.

You should also consider whether you want to type on the laptop itself or work using an external keyboard. Using an external keyboard is largely recommended, but those determined to work from their laptop should look for a stand with a sturdy frame and fairly solid tray base.
