Didn’t get the Christmas present you were quite hoping for? Or maybe you’ve planned a big family Boxing Day shopping trip to make the most out of the festive period. Either way, the final sales event of the year is finally here and there’s plenty of bargains to bag.

For anyone saving up for a new phone, the Samsung Galaxy S22 128GB is now on sale for $749 (down from $1149) – that’s a huge $400 off! Ring in 2024 with features like Nightography, Wireless PowerShare, fast charging and a fast 4nm processor.

You can also find a few other phones under the $1000 mark, such as the Apple iPhone (now $996, down from $1096) and Motorola razr 40 (now $795, down from $995).

If cleaning is the only thing on your mind after Christmas, The Good Guys have also slashed $555 off the Dyson Gen5detect Absolute Cordless Vacuum (now $994, down from $1549). And yes, it is one of the Dyson stick vacs that come with special cleaner head that lights up all the hard-to-see dust and debris. Electrolux’s 8kg Heat Pump Dryer has similarly dropped to $799 (down from $1549), which is a saving of $800.

WHAT IS BOXING DAY?

Boxing Day occurs on 26 December, the day following Christmas. The sales event offers an opportunity for retailers to clear their stock, particularly Christmas-themed gifts, decorations and foods that lose their relevance with the passing of the holiday season. First started in the UK, it has long been the most renowned sales event in Australia, though US-born Black Friday weekend has grown in popularity in recent years.

Typically an occasion for shoppers to converge on storefronts, consumers behaviours have noticeably shifted online in recent years, so bargain hunters can be assured of brands prioritising robust and competitive deals online in the lead up to, and during, Boxing Day sales.

WHERE DOES THE NAME ‘BOXING DAY’ ORIGINATE?

There are two widely-accepted theories as to where the term ‘Boxing Day’ originates from: the first, is that it started in the 1800s, when the affluent would give their servants the day off after Christmas festivities, often sending them away with a box of small gifts and leftover food. The second is that like the holiday it succeeds, Boxing Day has its origins in Christianity, and references the almsgiving plate passed around church services, the contributions of which were handed out on the feast of St Stephens – December 26.
