Netflix reveals Australia’s best internet providers for streaming

With many Australians dealing with multiple Covid lockdowns in the past 18 months, streaming has become an even bigger part of our lives and fast broadband more important than ever.
Problem was, back in the early days of the Covid outbreak, Australian broadband speed was rated as 60th in the world by the global speed index.

But Australia is now sitting at ninth place for best internet speed globally and with all that extra internet power, Netflix has placed Australia at the top of its ISP Speed Index.
We share the top spot with countries like Hong Kong, Norway, Singapore and Switzerland with a score of 3.6Mbps while the lowest ranking country, Venezuela, has 1.4Mbps.
Netflix calculates the rankings based on maximum achieved bit rate during its three busiest viewing hours.

Australia’s best internet providers for Netflix
Netflix has ranked the top internet providers for streaming in Australia, with figures correct as at July 2021.
Telstra, Optus and TPG currently offer the best speeds but the difference between those and other providers is minimal at 0.2Mbps.

– Telstra: 3.6Mbps (non-NBN): 3.4Mbps
– TPG: 3.6Mbps
– Aussie Broadband: 3.4Mbps
– Dodo/iPrimus: 3.4Mbps
– Exetel: 3.4Mbps
– iiNet: 3.4Mbps
– MyRepublic: 3.4Mbps
– Vodafone: 3.4Mbps
The Netflix ISP speed index lists the average prime time bit rate for content streamed to Netflix subscribers each month.
It provides this information with a few disclosures:
Netflix download speeds are likely to be slower during prime time hours (i.e. evenings from 7pm to 11pm). So the speeds cited above may actually be higher at certain points, like early morning and mid afternoon, as fewer people are likely to be streaming.
The absolute minimum internet speed required watching Netflix is 0.5Mbps, but this will give a poor image quality. The higher your speed, the more consistently high-quality your stream will be.
