Amid the rising cost of living, millions of Australians might be able to find a bit of financial relief to help pay one common household bill.

Commonwealth Bank has partnered with NBN provider More to give all the bank’s credit and debit card customers 30 per cent off their internet bill for 12 months.

The deal would see customers who don’t use much internet and opt for a NBN 25 plan with More get it for $46.20 per month rather than $66, while people who need super-fast internet could get an NBN 250 plan for $83.30 per month instead of $119.

The offer comes alongside new research from Commonwealth Bank, revealing almost half (47 per cent) of Australians surveyed admit to doing little to no research when choosing their internet provider, potentially paying more than needed on bills.

There are other barriers stopping Aussies making the switch too, with three in five worried other providers will not be better or are much the same (60 per cent), followed by simply being comfortable with their current provider (42 per cent).

More CEO Andrew Branson said Aussies shouldn’t put off changing to a better suited and more affordable internet provider just because of the effort of switching, because every dollar saved counts.

“The common perception is that changing internet providers is more hassle than it’s worth. But if you could be spending less with a different provider and receiving a better quality of broadband, then it’s probably time to swap,” Mr Branson said.

Blacktown resident Daryl Rodriguez took advantage of the More and Commonwealth Bank offer to find a better internet deal.

His whole house is connected to the internet – being a smart home – with lights, the door, garage, TV and everything else dependent on a good internet connection.

He said the savings were too good to miss and found the switch really straightforward to handle during his busy work life as he was able to do it all online and have it set up in a matter of days.

He saved $31.30 per month, which he’s now using to pay for his household’s streaming services and the cost of online cloud storage.

“The thing that made me convinced to sign up is the fact that there was no contract, so if I’m not happy with it I can always revert back to another internet company,” Mr Rodriguez said.

“It’s the flexibility of being able to move from one provider to another without having to worry about early termination fees, or if I decided to move to somewhere else.”

Internet plans with month-to-month or short-term payment options are becoming far more commonplace than long, fixed term contracts, giving consumers greater flexibility to switch providers when they spot a better deal.

What to consider when switching NBN providers

If you’re thinking some extra savings in your pocket could be worth the switch to a new NBN provider, Mr Branson says a good approach is to focus on your reasons for switching.

Here’s his top tips of what to look out for when comparing NBN.

Price

“In some cases, you can get your NBN plan on the same speed tier for a lower price with another provider,” Mr Branson said.

“Keep in mind that this could require a trade-off in terms of the bandwidth the service has, or you may see a difference in typical evening speeds that can be achieved on your plan.

“You can also save some money by searching for a plan that doesn’t require you to buy a new modem or enter into a lock-in contract.”

Value for money

Mr Branson said not all NBN plans are created equal, so it’s important to check if you’re actually getting good value for money.

“Even if two plans are offering the same speed for the same price, there will often be something that separates them. It’s important here to look at the detail and what’s most important to you in selecting a plan,” he said.

Better service

It’s difficult but not impossible to figure out the trustworthiness or service quality of a particular provider, which could be an important factor when you’re signing up for a new NBN service.

“Reputable comparison and product review sites are a helpful source of information, as well as the individual provider’s website – those that provide extended technical support hours, as well as many means of contact (phone, email, WhatsApp, live chat options, and so on),” Mr Branson said.

Higher speed

The More CEO recommends selecting a provider that rates highly on the ACCC’s broadband performance tests, or those that report higher speeds in peak usage times, if you’re interested in getting the fastest connection possible.

“The age and quality of your modem hardware can also impact the speeds you can achieve, as well as the nbn™ connection method at your property,” Mr Branson said.
