Everybody loves a comeback story - whether its Sly Stallone’s performance as an ex-con trying to reclaim his criminal empire in Tulsa King, Seth Rogan’s fresh spin on the pizza-loving Ninja Turtles or the return of TV favourites like CSI and Frasier.“We really think of it as a new Frasier. We don’t really think of it as a reboot, because we haven’t rebooted anything. It’s just a character that has not fallen from grace. He’s still a loved and beloved character. And one we really love playing.

In the current climate, Kelsey Grammer saw a hunger for the familiarity and fun that Frasier provided.

That’s why Grammer – who has played the imperious Dr Crane on and off for 40 years since making his debut on the sitcom Cheers – wasn’t worried about bringing Frasier back to the screen two decades after he said “Goodnight Seattle” for the last time. But there’s one beloved character who won’t be returning to our screens. David Hyde-Pierce, who played Frasier’s younger brother Niles, will not be making an appearance. Explaining his decision to skip the reboot, Hyde-Pierce said he didn’t want the commitment. “They don’t actually need me,” he told Variety. “Frasier has moved on to a new world... and the new people they have are great.”

Watch great movies, sport, TV shows and much more on Paramount+ for $9.99 a month with a seven day free trial.

This second season sees Frasier’s Seattle radio colleague, Ros (Peri Gilpin) considering a move to Boston with her daughter, Alice (who will be played by Grammer’s real-life child, Greer). Also joining the cast is Everybody Loves Raymond star Patricia Heaton as a down-to-earth bartender.

Rumours of Sylvester Stallone’s death have been greatly exaggerated. Six years after the Rambo star became the target of a hoax, and the 78-year-old action star has again been subject of online rumours he’d died. Far from having gone to the great boxing ring in the sky, Stallone is busier than ever filming his reality series with his wife and three daughters, The Family Stallone, and this second season of his hit series Tulsa King. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the powerhouse behind the Yellowstone franchise, Stallone plays Dwight, a former crime boss trying to find his feet (and regain his empire) after being released from prison. Season two picks up with Dwight and his crew facing looming threats from the Kansas City Mob.

David Boreanaz has hinted that his character Jason Hayes –the intense leader of an elite Navy squad – may not get a happy ending in this seventh and final season of the gritty action drama. “Ultimately, he may be taken by the biggest force of all, and that’s death,” the one-time star of Angel and Bones teased. In this last instalment, Jason struggles to balance his work as a warrior with single fatherhood. Even before it was announced that this would be the end for SEAL Team, Boreanaz had decided to call time on the show. “This for me has been a full circle journey,” he said. “Heading into [this] season even before the writers’ strike, I decided that this was the end for me — that’s something not too many people are aware of.”

Don’t let the headlines fool you. While serial prankster Jack Steele created a major stir when an appearance at a feminist talk helmed by Clementine Ford and Yumi Stynes left the audience outraged and in tears, the group’s antics usually raise a smile, not ire. Steele together with Matt “Falcon” Ford, Liam Moore and Dom Littrich has amassed more than 2 million followers on social media with their laconic practical jokes. And their TV show is proving just as much a winner (controversial pranks aside). Season two again features the four mates daring one another to pull pranks on unsuspecting members of the public such as offering lewd tips to tradies at a hardware store and attempting to sell unmarketable products such as reusable condoms.

He’s not just Ken, he’s Bob Marley. Kingsley Ben-Adir who was one of Ryan Gosling’s posse of Kens in the Barbie movie, has now taken on the role of Reggae legend, Bob Marley. The biopic, made in consultation with the Marley family, chronicles the singer’s rise to fame in the 1970s as well as his complicated relationship with wife Rita (Lashana Lynch) until his 1981 death. Bob’s son Ziggy Marley explained: “Our story’s about this man inside himself and his heart. It’s not a typical biopic or rags-to-riches story. It’s spiritual, too.” While the biopic didn’t impress critics, Ziggy fans had reacted with enthusiasm to the film, some even weeping when the trailers were released. “I was like: ‘Yeah, this is actually perfect for something representing Bob. That the critics don’t get it, but the people get it.’”

Much like MasterChef, changed the way people talked about food, CSI changed the way people look at crimes. After 15 seasons of watching Grissom and the gang use science to unmask countless killers, American jurors came to expect the same forensic proof before they would convict. It was dubbed the CSI effect. Whether you are well-versed in DNA and Luminol, there’s no doubting the entertainment effect of CSI, which is why it was brought out of retirement in 2021 with a mix of fresh faces and fan favourites. In this gripping new thriller, successful food writer Birdie Bell (Keddie) ignores her instincts (and many, many red flags) to fall head over heels for the lying lothario Joe Burt (David Wenham) after meeting him on a dating app. Rest assured Joe isn’t simply another “Tinder Swindler” or Dirty John 2.0 looking to bleed wealthy and vulnerable women dry. Keddie believes the series will resonate with even the most cynical of viewers, just as writer Stephanie Wood’s original story had with readers. The Gold Logie winner believes Birdie buys Joe’s outlandish web of lies because she –like so many women – had been raised to believe she needed a man to feel complete. “I’m 49 and grew up in the 70s and the 80s where that Princess Myth was in full force. Thankfully, for me, it didn’t play a part in my childhood because I was surrounded by many feminists who encouraged me to walk to the beat of my own drum.” Steaming July 4.

Production on this third season of this compelling crime saga –created by Taylor Sheridan (the brains behind the Yellowstone franchise) – was delayed after its star Jeremy Renner was nearly killed in a snowplough accident at his Nevada ranch. The Avengers star broke 38 bones when he leaped in front of the heavy vehicle to prevent his nephew being hit. In an interview with Men’s Health, Renner talked about feeling his skull break from the force of the plough.” Cheek bone broke, eye socket broke, and then from the crushing of getting run over by the machine, my eye bulged out. I could see my left eyeball with my right eyeball. I was screaming for a breath.” Despite his ordeal, Renner miraculously survived and returned to the Mayor of Kingstown set to play Mike McLusky, a man charged with keeping the peace in a volatile crime-riddled town. The series picks up with Mike still grieving his mother’s death as he gears up to face new enemies and dark secrets from his past.

Cate Blanchett scored her eighth Oscar nomination playing the monstrous Lydia Tar but ultimately missed out on claiming her third statue when sentimental favourite Michelle Yeoh won for her work in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Nonetheless, Blanchett delivers a powerhouse performance as an egotistical orchestra conductor whose career - and mental health - is brought undone by revelations of her bullying and abusive behaviour with her young mentors. While the film attracted some controversy for painting a woman as being as predatory as men in similar positions, this is a fascinating exploration of misuse of power. The series, which has also spawned three movies – featuring stars such as Antonio Banderas, Scarlett Johansson, Keanu Reeves, Snoop Dogg and David Hasselhoff – and two spin-off shows (all available on Paramount+) has become an enduring favourite for kids and adults alike. But be warned, the theme song will be stuck in your head for days (if not years) to come.
