WHY IS IT CALLED VALENTINE’S DAY?
It’s a day we’ve come to associate with flowers, chocolates and declarations of love, but the origins of Valentine’s Day are a little more heart wrenching. It’s said that Valentine’s Day is named after St Valentine, a monk who lived in Rome in the third century. St Valentine is said to have rebelled against the orders of Emperor Claudius II who banned soldiers from getting married as he felt they didn’t perform as well, helping them to wed in secret. Once his scheme was discovered, St Valentine was sentenced to death, falling in love with a jailer’s daughter while incarcerated. Before he was executed, he is said to have sent her a love letter, “from your Valentine”.
WHEN IS VALENTINE’S DAY?
Valentine’s Day is always celebrated on February 14 and this year, it conveniently falls on a Monday.
