For the Magimix 5200XL, I tested it over the course of a few weeks. I used all the attachments on a range of ingredients of different sizes and firmness levels to create pesto, salad, bread, burger patties, meringues and pressed orange juice.

WHAT CAN THE MAGIMIX FOOD PROCESSOR 5200XL DO?

The Magimix Food Processor 5200XL is designed to cater between six and eight people, and offers 1000W worth of food prep power. And when combined with the large capacity 3.6L main bowl, you can knead up to two loaves or grate up 1.4kg of veggies in a single go.

You can expect three buttons (auto, pulse and stop), along with plenty of attachments to make everything from sauces, dips and soups to different types of bread, pizzas, pies, savoury and sweet cakes, jelly, soufflé, purée and juices.

Here’s a breakdown of what the Magimix 5200XL food processor can do:

• Slices

• Grates

• Chops

• Whisks

• Emulsifies

• Blends

• Kneads

• Citrus presses.

HOW MUCH DOES THE MAGIMIX FOOD PROCESSOR 5200XL COST?

Made in France, the Magimix 5200XL food processor boasts a sexy and modern design that’s available in matte chrome, black and white. It looks surprisingly less bulky than I expected, especially considering the base alone weighs a hefty 11kg – but it’s definitely not compact and will need a bit of benchspace and storage space.

The unit also has a cord compartment at the bottom, which can be used to shorten the cable when you’re cooking as well as keep it tucked neartly when the machine is hidden away.

IS THE MAGIMIX FOOD PROCESSOR 5200XL EASY TO SET UP?

Honestly, pairing the attachments can seem a little intimidating and take some time to figure out. Thankfully, the 100-recipe cookbook features step-by-step instructions on how to fit each accessory and explanations on how each they should be used. This definitely made setting up the main bowl and stainless steel S-blade fairly simple. Keep in mind that certain blades and discs must be used with specific bowls.

If you plan to wash all the accessories in one go, make sure to neatly place anything that has multiple parts together and in the right order. I quickly learned my lesson after the countertop turned into Hell’s Kitchen. The good thing is that most parts click into place, so it’s not a total guessing game.

IS THE MAGIMIX FOOD PROCESSOR 5200XL EASY TO USE?

Once you’ve understood how everything works and know what should go into where, this

Magimix food processor is pretty easy to use. One of the best things about it is how you can layer the bowls to minimise clutter. This means starting with larger mixtures and ingredients in the main bowl, then progressively adding the midi bowl and mini bowl after you’ve finished each task.

I loved how I was able to mince 500g of meat in the main bowl, slice carrots in the midi bowl and chop a small amount of onion in the top mini compartment with a single touch of a button. Talk about efficient!

To test out the discs, I used both the 2mm and 4mm slicing discs on several whole carrots. They easily fitted into the wide feed tube and gave professional looking results within seconds. I also used the 4mm option on a couple of cucumbers, which went down just as smooth and came out similarly thin.

Grating cheddar cheese was a tad trickier for the machine and did require the pusher. Most of it stuck together, but still looked like it has obviously been grated and not clumpy.

The blades also ooze high quality and are wonderfully sharp, making chopping and slicing quick and effortless. I also had no problem working with nuts and hard produce like carrots.

On the downside, whole apples had to be cut into smaller pieces when inserted into the large feed tube. (Although to be fair, they were unusually chunky.) The dough blade, which can also be used for mixing as well as kneading, had a slightly difficult time with the mince mixture and I had to wipe down the sides a few times. On the other hand, it seemed to work through bread dough more easily.

I also feel like the instruction guide could have included more information on how to use the food processor and the attachments. If you’re a beginner cook or haven’t used a similarly versatile food processor, you may find yourself Googling for answers pretty quick. But the instruction manual does offer good step-by-step picture instructions on how to set everything up and explains which attachments need to be used for certain tasks.

Despite having only one speed setting (excluding pulse), the auto program conveniently adjusts the motor power depending on what’s in the bowl. Loaded with a 1000W professional motor, this premium product surprisingly offers less horsepower than some other models. But in saying that, it still definitely has enough kick to handle a variety of tasks. It only took two or three pulses to chop a boiled egg to super small bits.

IS THE MAGIMIX FOOD PROCESSOR 5200XL EASY TO CLEAN?

There are quite a few parts to clean, but nothing needed serious elbow grease. For the record, I washed everything by hand. There aren’t many tight or hard to reach crevices that make washing up difficult (except for the grating disc), although you will need to be careful soaping the blades – again, they are sharp. As with anything stainless steel, it’s also a good habit to wash the blades and discs immediately after you’ve finished using it so any wet batter doesn’t dry into the surface. Of course, towel dry them to avoid rust or water stains.

IS THE MAGIMIX 5200XL FOOD PROCESSOR WORTH BUYING?

This Magimix 5200XL Food Processor is what the air fryer is to the cooking world. It might be the only food prep tool you’ll need, with everything from slicers and dicers to a citrus juicer attachment neatly packed into one super sleek machine.

After watching countless TikToks and Instagram reels on drool-worthy lunch box setups, I’ve been on the hunt for a good multifunctional mandoline slicer. Unfortunately, browsing the aisles of the Internet only led me towards options with questionable quality and dissatisfied reviewers – and let’s be honest, the rising popularity of trendy bento boxes has probably pushed up the price for what’s essentially a plastic slicer with a lid.

But having tried the Magimix 5200XL, I think I’ve found the perfect replacement. It’s so versatile and simple that I might even go as far to say I’m mostly not lying when I list cooking as one of my hobbies.

Powerful and versatile

The Magimix 5200XL puts the ‘power’ into ‘powerhouse’ with its professional grade 1100W motor, and pours in decent value for money with around 11 accessories on top of the main stainless steel Sabatier blade, extra large feed tube and three different sized bowls. And unlike with the cheaper alternatives, Magimix’s accessories seem durable and good quality.

But the best part? As someone who’s purchased several appliances that remain either unopened or barely used, it was great to see how practical everything is since many of the individual attachments are versatile; for example, the main and mini S-blades can be used to chop and mince, while the dough blade can blend and knead.

I’ve saved so much time on food prep that I can make weekly lunches without spending a chunk of my Sunday standing over chopping board and cramped hands.

I also managed to whip up fresh lumpia (a Filipino dish made with plenty of fairly thinly sliced veggies) for family and friends well within under half an hour – a task that has historically taken my family multiple people hours to make growing up. I’m still in shock.

Plus, I can easily switch to my ‘baker’s hat’ without having to take out the stand mixer.

Easy to use

I thought having just an auto speed setting and pulse function would be limiting, but I was still able to exercise enough control. (Bear in mind I’m not a chef by any means, and someone who’s fine with chopping ingredients when the recipe calls for diced).

The model is also pretty beginner friendly, as long as you use have the how-to guides (in the cookbook) always on hand.

Price

The Magimix 5200XL food processor is not the cheapest product out there and likely a more suitable investment for people who tend to cook a wide variety of food in large batches.

It’s a great option to invest in if you meal prep, have a large family or regularly have guests over. And despite being a home appliance, this food processor will also be perfect for any side hustles. It’s a powerful appliance that can handle heavy mixtures, easily cut through firm ingredients, and whip up plenty of servings at once.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAGIMIX 5200XL AND 5200XL PREMIUM?

Despite the $300 price difference, both Magimix food processors have the same machine. The only difference is that the 5200XL Premium comes with the additional juice extractor kit and three disc kit (parmesan disc, 1mm slicing disc and 6mm grating disc), which would otherwise set you back $605 for both. Whether you should upgrade to the premium alternative depends on what you’re planning on using the food processor for. Both acccessories work well – but unless you’re going to be regularly juicing oranges and need super fine slices, the 5200XL is totally fine.
