In great timing, just as I needed to upgrade from a double to a queen size mattress, Koala decided to launch the brand spankin’ new Luxe Mattress.*
The Koala site describes it as “Redefining luxury sleep, with 50 per cent more Kloudcell® and seven multi-layered support zones for unparalleled comfort. Drift off with dynamic temperature control, all wrapped in sumptuous Australian Cashmere”.
It sounds dreamy, right? I can confirm it is.
Although this wasn’t my first mattress-in-a-box experience, so I knew a bit about what to expect, I can say I was pleasantly surprised at how quick and easy it was to set up and how mind-blowing it was to sleep on.

This mattress is everything I could have asked for, and more.
I was the type of person to jump out of bed as soon as my alarm went off. But now, getting out of bed every morning is a struggle. And don’t get me started on the nights – my new mattress is just so cosy and comfy to chill out in.
To put it simply, it feels like I’m sleeping in a hotel every single night and I can’t get enough of it.

The delivery process and set-up is also super easy and straightforward, great for those of us who just can’t seem to focus when it comes to reading instructions.

I’ve been testing the Koala Luxe Mattress for the past month, conveniently timed in the autumn season to experience both cooler and warmer nights. My fiance also slept over multiple nights so we could see what it’s like with two people – he runs hot and is nursing a shoulder injury and I normally run cold and have a sensitive lower back.

FULL REVIEW OF THE KOALA LUXE MATTRESS
The Luxe Mattress is the newest product launch from Koala and it’s “designed to change the definition of luxury.”
As mentioned, this was not my first experience with a mattress-in-a-box, so read on for my honest review of how it compared to other brands I’ve tried.
DELIVERY AND SET-UP
The morning of the delivery – at about 10am – I received a text message to say my delivery would be arriving between 1pm and 5pm. At about 1pm, I received another text message to say the delivery was on its way and it arrived within the hour. Pretty impressive if you ask me!
Two boxes showed up at my doorstep, and they were quite large and heavy – so you may need an extra hand to help you sort them out.
Starting with the first box, I slid the Base Layer out and cut open the heat seal to unravel the mattress. Once it’s all rolled out, you need to tear along the heat sealed strip to open the bag and slide the actual product out of the bag. Pop it on your bed frame and make sure the zipper head is sitting front and centre.
Note: You’ll notice in these photos that I have no bed frame – my new one was still stuck in transit so the mattress was left on the floor of my bedroom for a few days until it arrived.
Then you’re going to want to repeat those same steps for the second box, also know as the Comfort Layer and Topper. Pop the second layer on top of the base layer and then you’ll need to zip the two together. Super easy!
The Koala Luxe Mattress weighs in at 42kg, so I wouldn’t say it’s super easy to move around. As strong as I am, I just couldn’t do it on my own as it was just a tad too heavy and awkward to adjust.
If you’re conscious of your rubbish, keep in mind that you will need to dispose of cardboard boxes and plastic covers.
DESIGN AND COMFORT
My previous mattress was also memory foam, so I didn’t need to adjust to the sensation too much – but I did notice a crazy difference in overall comfort and softness.
For starters, the Luxe Mattress has 50 per cent more Kloudcell than the Koala SE mattress – and if you aren’t familiar with Koala tech, Kloudcell is designed to gently support broad surfaces like your back while also providing pressure relief to your joints (like your hips and knees).
I have a sensitive lower back and my fiance is nursing a five-year old shoulder injury and we found the mattress to be super supportive and comfortable. It genuinely feels like you’re sleeping on a cloud that’s hugging you all night long.
The mattress also comes equipped with a seven multi layered support zone and edge support – so you can roll and move around as much as you want, without a disrupted sleep.
I am a light sleeper that’s always moving around so this was handy in reducing disruption to my sleep – but it did still happen on occasion.
The Kloudcell topper also works to adjust to your body temperature’s fluctuations throughout the night, and there’s a copper-infused and antimicrobial comfort layer to keep the heat away on those especially warm nights.
The best part? The comfort is seriously like no other. The Luxe Mattress offers a super luxe Aussie cashmere blend (a mattress with cashmere, who knew that would change my life!) and a linen blend bouclé made from recycled fabrics. The comfort from this amazing combination of fabrics is honestly next level and feels oh so plush and luxe.
PRICE: HOW MUCH DOES THE KOALA LUXE MATTRESS COST?
The Koala Luxe Mattress is the more pricier pick when you look at the rest of the brand’s offerings. The double size costs $2000, the queen will set you back $2250 and the king size retails for $2650.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t score a discount. Mattress brands like Koala will often go on sale, usually around the end of financial year sales and major sale events like Black Friday and Click Frenzy.

If you’ve been looking for someone to point you in the right direction of a new mattress, let it be this one. The Koala Luxe Mattress may be a splurge (sitting at $2250 for the queen size) but nothing can compare when it comes to investing in your sleep.

The Luxe Mattress is the more premium pick when you look at the rest of what Koala has to offer.
You might find something close from other popular mattress brands, like Eva’s Premium Adapt Mattress, which is slightly cheaper, but doesn’t come with all the comfort technology this Koala one does.
Or with Ecosa’s Pure Mattress – it’s also slightly cheaper than Koala’s, but it doesn’t offer the same luxurious materials – so you’re certainly getting what you pay for.
