Nothing says ‘Merry Christmas’ quite like telling your visiting in-laws they’ll need to sleep on a lumpy sofa bed that’s one broken spring away from a chiropractor appointment.

While the holidays have famously been the season for friends and families to come together, shrinking property sizes and apartment living have caused the typical idea of a ‘spare room’ to become a foreign concept. So, aside from telling your out-of-town relatives to book a hotel at the busiest time of the year, the sofa bed becomes the answer.

But who wants to sleep on a dodgy couch that takes three people to assemble and sags in the middle? That’s where the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed comes in.

A sofa so comfortable, you won’t even feel guilty for sleeping in your own bed while guests slumber on the pull-out

The difference with the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed is that it resembles a real bed, more closely than any pull-out couch you’ve ever wrestled with. This is because it’s made with a wooden slatted base and easy slide-out function (no clunky hinges here), converting it into a sturdy, comfortable bed.

How are we so sure it’s comfortable? Because we’ve tested it ourselves.

1-MINUTE REVIEW: EVA SLIDEAWAY SOFA BED

Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed, $2,890 at Eva

What You Need To Know:

Award-winning and boasting a 4.8 average star rating from over 200 reviews, the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed makes the pull-out couch you grew up with look bad. Designed with a sturdy, slatted base, the sofa bed mimics the wooden slats of a regular bed. This not only encourages better airflow and stability (no more sinking in the middle), but makes it really easy to convert into a bed or a daybed, just by pulling from the bottom to extend the base. The sofa bed is available to buy in a range of colours and fabrics, with all covers washable, so you won’t need to worry about spills. You’ll also find upcycled memory foam in the cushions, that are able to be adjusted if you want them a little less firm.

What comes in the box: Sofa back and arms, bed base, cushions, covers.

HOW WE TESTED THE EVA SLIDEAWAY SOFA BED

I tested the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed for one month, setting it up in my home office. For over four weeks, I converted it to and from couch, daybed and bed modes. I used it for sitting and doing work; chilling out with friends over coffee and taking many - many - Sunday naps.

Delivery and set-up

Eva is pretty brilliant when it comes to shipping. After my order was confirmed, I was informed by the shipping company of when it would be arriving, and was even texted a live tracking link closer to the drop-off time, so I could see the truck making its way through town and pulling up in my driveway.

The Slideaway Sofa Bed comes in four boxes which are dropped at your front door, unless you pay a small fee for in-room delivery (which I would recommend if you don’t have a partner to help you load the boxes inside).

Assembly instructions are provided and easy to follow, but the tool-free setup was so easy, my husband and I barely looked at the manual. We first set up the back and shoulders, before attaching the legs to the base, sliding it into position and securing it to the back and shoulders.

The compressed foam cushions and seat/mattress were easy to break out of the plastic wrap, but be warned - they expand extremely quickly, so it’s a good idea to have your separately boxed cushion covers ready to go, as these can be trickier to wrangle onto the cushions once fully expanded. Eva’s clear tags on all the cushion covers make it easy to know what cover is for what cushion, and where it should sit on the sofa

Once your mattress and cushions are on, simply pull the couch out from the end, sliding the base so that the couch extends to whatever length you like. You can adjust the depth of the couch to be short or long, or pull the whole way and the foam base will drop down flat to form a mattress. Leave the cushions against the back of the headboard and you’ve got yourself a daybed, or take them off completely to make the bed up for guests.

How comfortable is an Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed?

I find myself being drawn to the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed every single day. The firm side cushions are great to sit against with your legs out when you’ve got some afternoon work to get done on your laptop. This is what makes it a brilliant couch for the home office - either my husband or I will relocate to the sofa at various points throughout the day for a change of pace. Or, I’ll extend the couch into daybed mode after hours so I can sprawl out and have a TikTok scroll or read my book with a cup of tea.

To sleep on, the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed sets new standards for guest beds. It’s spacious enough to comfortably sleep two people, measuring wider than a double bed. It’s fairly firm, so it provides good support for guests like older family members who might struggle with a super plush mattress. While there is a crease down the middle of the bed where the couch folds back in half, this isn’t too much of an issue and can even help you and your partner stay on your respective sides of the bed. I have found this to be the most comfortable sofa bed to sleep on, more like a real bed than any competitor I’ve tried.

Other features of the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed

Aside from being the perfect couch to perch on, lounge around in or sleep on, the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed comes with a range of possibilities to really make it your own. Upon purchase, you can choose from Classic Weave, French Linen, Chenille or Chunky Weave fabrics. I went with Classic Weave, Eva’s most popular fabric, which offers a slightly hardier woven texture that looks really classy in a home office and is incredibly durable. The Chenille fabric is also a super popular choice that is making the rounds online, bringing a warm, retro vibe - particularly in the Rose colour.

After choosing your fabric, you can choose a colour, from two or five different options depending on your fabric. If you aren’t quite sure on fabrics, Eva offers a free set of swatches for you to get the look and feel of in your own home. And, if one day your tastes change or you’ve given the room a re-style, you can buy additional sofa bed covers from $650.

You can also purchase a 360-degree rotating side table that can be attached to an armrest for cups of coffee or mobile phones to rest on, as well as hemp linen sheets, pillows and throw pillows to make your guest’s stay as dreamy as possible.

Materials used in the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed

The Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed uses a frame made from a blend of sustainably sourced American Ash Timber and plywood with American Ash veneer, all finished with a natural low VOC oil. The mattress or base is made from multilayer polyurethane foam with an upcycled memory foam and polyester fibre duvet wrap for a plush topper, while the cushions are made from upcycled foam and polyester fibre. The fill of these cushions can be adjusted to customise plushness, thanks to the removable covers. The Classic Weave and Chenille fabrics are made from 100 per cent polyester, while the Chunky Weave includes 5 per cent acrylic, and the French Linen is 100 per cent linen.

What colours are available in the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed?

Depending on which fabric you choose, the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed offers a range of colours. In the Classic Weave (the fabric I tested), you can choose from Terracotta, Olive, Oatmeal or Moss Green. I went with Olive and am absolutely smitten. Against the ash timber frame, it has a gorgeous earthy aesthetic that’s understated and timeless.

How to care for an Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed

The Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed is designed to be durable, so the brand recommends just a regular vacuum to get rid of any dust or dirt that collects over time. The washable covers can be machine washed on a cycle cooler than 30 degrees celsius, and shouldn’t be tumble dried. Harsh cleaning products should also be avoided, and direct sunlight may cause the fabric and timber to fade over time.

How much does an Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed cost?

The Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed comes in a range of prices, depending on the fabric you choose:

Classic Weave: $2,550

Chunky Weave: $2,890

Chenille: $2,890

French Linen: $3,490

You’ll also pay a shipping fee which may vary depending on your location.

Verdict: Is the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed worth it?

In my opinion, yes, the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed is absolutely worth having in your home. Because it boasts a consistently premium level of comfort in all three modes: couch, daybed and bed, you really aren’t making any compromises with this sofa bed. In fact, if you’re living in a smaller space, this could absolutely suffice as your only lounge. The ability to extend it to whatever length you desire means that you can keep it as an upright sitting couch when you’re short on space or wanting to do some work and not get too cosy. Or, you can pull it out a little - or a lot - to properly kick back. It doesn’t require three people or any serious willpower to convert it into a bed, and the minimalist frame makes it so easy to make up for guests.

Knowing that I can now invite long-distance friends and family to stay in our home, with the confidence that they will sleep comfortably, brings me nearly as much joy as sitting in the Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed myself - it is truly a dream.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the purpose of a sofa bed?

A sofa bed is a couch that can convert into a bed, usually a double-bed size. It is a great money and space-saving way to host extra people in your home when you don’t have a spare bedroom or spare bed, or you need to accommodate extra guests than your home generally sleeps. When there is no need for an additional bed, the sofa bed can remain in couch mode, though some may find it handy to convert to bed mode to make things cosy when lounging about or watching a movie.

What is the lifespan of a sofa bed?

How long a sofa bed will last depends heavily on the quality of the sofa, and how much it gets used. The Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed has a five-year structural warranty, and is made with durable materials designed to last.

Are sofa beds uncomfortable?

Sofa beds typically have a reputation for being less comfortable than a regular bed, largely due to their convertible construction and limitations that a regular bed base does not have. The Eva Slideaway Sofa Bed is designed to overcome these structural limitations for comfort, with an innovative slatted base design, modelled from that of a regular bed base.

Should I buy a sofa bed?

If you regularly have guests coming to stay, or you don’t have a spare room or bed in your house and think you might like to host guests (like family members over the holiday periods), a sofa bed can be a great investment. It offers the convenience of a spare bed for when you need it, but remains a comfortable, space-saving couch when you don’t need it. Having somewhere to offer for guests to sleep can also create more quality time and moments of connection with loved ones, especially those from out of town. Now, when you invite people to come visit from far away, the financial pressure and hassle for them to find paid accommodation are alleviated, because they can simply stay with you.
