WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING A TREADMILL

Choosing the right treadmill for you will come down to your fitness goals and living space.

Type: There are so many types of treadmills including walking pads, curved treadmills, 2-in-1 treadmills, manual treadmills and foldable treadmills, as well as a multitude of different brands.

Fitness goals: For those who prefer to walk or jog on a level surface, you needn’t pay a premium price for a model with multiple levels of inclination or an inordinately powerful motor – rather, a basic model with varying speeds, or even a manual treadmill may best suit your fitness goals.

On the other hand, people who have already achieved an increased level of fitness and are looking to challenge themselves further may wish to invest in the latest of treadmills, complete with a powerful motor to achieve the fastest of speeds, up to a dozen or more levels of inclination, and entertainment hubs to keep you motivated as you run.

Space and size: Think about the space you have in your living room or spare room for the size of the treadmill you’re after. Fortunately, there are many models on the market now that are designed with portability and storage in mind, so you’re certain to find the treadmill for you, no matter your living arrangements.

Features: Consider things like belt length, speed, incline, noise, and display. Also, some models now feature hiit treadmill workouts, trainer-led programs and virtual classes, as well as entertainment hubs like a TV that are great for keeping you engaged while walking, and get the heart pumping.

Budget: How much are you willing to spend on a treadmill? There’s a whole range of prices, from a basic no-frills walking pad to a smart treadmill with all of the extra features.

HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS

In addition, our shopping team read hundreds of customer reviews and looked at test results and ratings from product review sites to find the best treadmill from premium to budget.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS BETTER FOR TREADMILL EXERCISE: WALKING OR RUNNING?

Ben believes a good treadmill is suitable for both walking and running. But it is important to note there are some more flimsy treadmills in the market, and it is best to only walk on them.

“I would reserve running for the sturdier, tried and tested machines, such as the ones that are commercially used in gyms,” he suggests.

“For me personally, I prefer to run outdoors. When I use a treadmill I am using power walking or jogging while taking a call or watching the news.”

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TREADMILLS?

There are so many types of treadmills including walking pads, curved treadmills, 2-in-1 treadmills, manual treadmills and foldable treadmills, as well as different brands.

“Lifespan Fitness is the one you will often see in commercial gyms,” he said.

“Peloton and Nordic Track are the machines that offer an experience and are often the go -to for home and hotel gyms. There are also now walking treadmills that are less sturdy and less safe to run on. They are often the ones that you find in offices.”

WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A TREADMILL?

Generally, you will want to look for a treadmill that is sturdy, safe and has railings on the sides so that people can hold onto it if they trip.

“A treadmill with a TV is good for keeping people engaged. For a home treadmill, I would look for treadmills that have trainer-led programs to keep the owner engaged and using their treadmill,” Ben recommends.

“In a commercial gym, the treadmills will often have hill, incline etc programs, but the Pelotons and NordicTracks have more engaging content.”

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHP AND HP MOTOR?

When researching the right treadmill for you, you will often encounter the strength of the motor being described in terms of CHP and HP – but what do those terms mean? CHP refers to Continuous Horsepower, and is considered the highest quality motor. That is because the motor is capable of performing at the same capacity continuously, as opposed to other types of HP (or Horsepower), which will peak in performance then decline.

WHAT IS COSY CARDIO?

Popularised by TikToker Hope Zuckerbrow, a "cosy cardio" workout is the complete opposite of everything you thought you knew about a cardio workout. If you don't like cardio, trust us this changes the game.

“I want 'cosy cardio' to be a movement for women to reclaim their relationship with exercise,” Hope said.

In her videos that have racked up millions of views, Hope’s routine of cosy cardio involves making herself a drink, setting up some mood lighting, putting on a  comfort TV show, and walking at a leisurely pace on her treadmill, all while wearing her pyjamas.

Since then millions have jumped on board the trend - just look up the hashtag #cozycardio on TikTok - with many loving the idea of not forcing themselves through a sweaty gym session.

"I'm so motivated now to exercise again," one commented, while another said, "I'm sold. I've bought the walking pad." Another raved: "Watching our generation find simple yet unique ways to support our bodies and bring joy into movement is so nice."

IS COSY CARDIO ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOU?

According to Ben, “It is also good for someone who may have busy 'sprints' at work. I often see that my corporate clients may have some busy periods, where they work long hours, and then feel too tired to come to the gym. Doing some 'cosy cardio' in front of the TV so they can get some movement in while they unwind is again, it’s better than nothing. When someone is stressed and run down, it is often best they do the less strenuous exercise anyway.”

However, Ben notes  that “cosy cardio” should just be one part of your fitness routine. “Resistance training is so important. Everyone should be doing some form of weight-bearing exercise for their muscular strength, bone density, posture, metabolism and more."

He sees “cosy cardio” as a great add-on to your usual exercise program.

“You can use it as part of your wind-down routine,” he suggests. “Walk for as long as you like and enjoy it."

Looking to incorporate some cosy cardio into your life? Ben likes the idea of people moving while watching TV.

“Many of us just sit in front of the TV after a long day at work, and if you have a desk job, adding some cosy cardio while you watch TV is great in my opinion,” he says.
