But with many factors at play, Australian stylist Donny Galella told news.com.au checkout choosing a coat that “sits on or just above your knee” will create a more timeless style.
“At the moment we are seeing oversized coats trending, these are generally longer around calf length. I love the longer length as you get more warmth, but like all trends, this length will date and soon be out of fashion,” he said.
“My other tip is always choose a coat that suits your body shape and proportions, so for taller men - these longer length coats look great, for average height guys go for the traditional length.
“If you love a really structured and fitted silhouette choose a coat with a belt, as the belt will give you more shape.”
Coats with a wool blend are a great place to start too, not only do they promote warmth but they’re universally stylish. Rochester’s Wool Melton Coat in Charcoal, currently on sale at Myer, is popular for its sophisticated and classic fit, while Country Road’s Superfine Wool Coat is a great choice for style and comfort.
Donny also is a big fan of the Adam Crombie Wool Blend Coat from Marcs, currently available at THE ICONIC for $399.95, which features relaxed shaping and a beautiful Espresso colour tone.
And remember it’s also not just about wool. If you’re after a Bomber Jacket, a Puffer Jacket, or a Denim Sherpa Jacket, we have you covered there too, with a great selection of options from brands including Superdry, Jack & Jones and Blaq.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN BUYING A MEN’S WINTER JACKET
Style and fit
Should you go for a bomber jacket or a traditional coat? A puffer jacket or a parka?
Stylist Donny Galella says oversized coats are trending right now, and picking a style that sits on or just above the knee will ensure a timeless look.
It’s also important to select a product that matches your body type, and also allows for clothes to be layered underneath.
Colour
Black or red? Caramel or charcoal? Colour is important when choosing a winter jacket.
A brighter colour can really make an outfit stand out and pop, while something more understated will be more versatile, and complement more options in your wardrobe.
“A classic black, charcoal, navy to camel colour will work with most colours, so try to choose one of these colours,” Galella adds.
Warmth
One of the reasons we buy a winter jacket is to keep cool across those winter months. And the materials and fabrics used play a really important role here.
For products like puffer jackets and parkas, the down-fill weight is important and affects the level of insulation. Picking a jacket with 600 to 850 fill should be warm enough for the Australian climate.
In blended woollen coats, Donny recommends to always check what the percentage of wool is, as often these products also use other materials like polyester or nylon.
“Always look at the internal label and look at what percentage is wool, ideally you want it to be 35% or more,” he said.
Features
A great jacket will have a range of standard features that will keep you warm and comfortable across winter.
Check the quality of the zippers, the hood, the pockets and whether you have closures to tighten up cuffs.
Also if you’re planning on hiking or spending more time outdoors, it may be important to select a product that’s waterproof or water resistant.
HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS
With so many fantastic options out there for a winter jacket, our team looked across social media and popular retail marketplaces like Myer and THE ICONIC to capture a sense of what's trending and what's popular this season.
We also spoke with stylist Donny Galella for his insights into what you should be looking for in a winter jacket, as well as his top product picks.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW DO I PICK A WINTER JACKET TO SUIT MY BODY TYPE?
Not all body shapes are the same and that’s going to play an important role in selecting the right jacket for you. If you’re a man with narrow shoulders, you might go for a slim fitting woollen coat. Where as if you’re broader or stockier, you might lead towards a puffer jacket with a more relaxed fit.
“Always choose a coat that suits you body shape and proportions,” explains stylist Donny Galella.
“So for taller men - these longer length coats looks great, for average height guys go for the traditional length. If you love a really structured and fitted silhouette choose a coat with a belt, as the belt will give you more shape.”
WHAT KIND OF WINTER JACKET SHOULD I PURCHASE?
This really comes down to the type of use you think you will get out of the jacket. If you’re looking for a product to wear to work, or social occasions, a classic blended woollen coat might work perfectly here.
If you’re a fan of long winter walks outdoors, then you may be better suited for a puffer jacket or a parka that’s designed for the elements.
While if you’re more of a winter fashionista, a leather jacket or a denim jacket may really help with lifting your cred in the style game.
HOW DO YOU CLEAN WOOL COATS?
Research into the cleaning of wool coats will turn up many different results. Some sources report that turning your washing machine to delicate or hand wash cycles will prevent any damage coming to your wool or wool-blend coats.
While this option is certainly appealing for cost-effectiveness and convenience, the wary among us may not choose to risk investment items in this way.
For light dirt sitting on top of fibres, use a stiff bristle brush, like this highly-rated one from Amazon. Small stains can be dabbed at with a clean, white tea towel after laying down a small mixture of detergent-mixed water. Everything else? We advise you trust a professional dry cleaner with restoring your wool coat.
