I’m calling it. If 2022 was the year of the micro mini then 2023 is the year of the maxi skirt. Think, elegant ankle-grazing silk and sleek floor-skimming pieces, the maxi skirt is well and truly here.
The trend was first seen on the runway in early 2022 during the Autumn/Winter showings followed by even more designers featuring long, ethereal pieces for their Spring/Summer 2023 collections in late 2022. Since then, maxi skirts have been seen in not only high-end designer collections but also everyday high-street fashion too, with brands such as Cotton On and Dazie, and celebrities and influencers, jumping on board.
Another mega player who has also been spotted trying out the new trend is stylist to the stars, Dani Michelle. Michelle is the stylist for some of the world’s most fashionable celebrities including the whole Kardashian family as well as Hailey Bieber, Nicola Peltz Beckham and more. Recently, the stylist was spotted repping Australian brand Lioness’ Hudson Satin Maxi Skirt. Although the cream colourway has sold out, it is still available in a beautiful rich mahogany. And at The Iconic right now, the skirt is only $59. A true workhorse, it is the perfect foundation for any capsule wardrobe. Comments on Michelle’s post include “obsessed”, “looks bomb” and “iconic.” American country music singer, Maren Morris, also commented saying “I want!”.

WHY ARE LONG SKIRTS MAKING A COMEBACK?
“With ‘90s minimalism coming to the fore, the longer hemline skirt has made a comeback. I love a longer hemline because it’s not overtly sexy, but still has an unexpected allure to it,” says Camilla Freeman-Topper, Creative Director of leading Australian designer brand CAMILLA AND MARC.
And while many may think a maxi skirt calls for over-the-top styling, Freeman-Topper says the easiest way to don the newest trend is when “styled simply with an oversized shirt or T-shirt, courtesy of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Jane Birkin and Gwyneth Paltrow.”
Everyone from supermodels like Kendall Jenner and Hailey Bieber to mega-influencers like Emma Chamberlain have also been spotted donning a maxi so it’s safe to say that it’s not going away any time soon.
And like any new fashion trend, it’s also become big on TikTok. The #maxiskirt has nearly 60 million views with TikTokers loving how versatile and easy to wear they are.
ON WHAT OCCASIONS CAN YOU WEAR A MAXI SKIRT?
The options are truly endless. Freeman-Topper suggests wearing one on date night for “subtle sexiness” or at the office with a crisp white shirt.
HOW CAN YOU BALANCE PROPOTIONS WHEN WEARING A MAXI?
“Perfect the fit – find the waistline, length and fit that you feel most comfortable in and suits your shape,” says Freeman-Topper. “Personally, I’m opting for a lower rise, tailored or a-line fit, and ankle grazing length. I am also not averse to a high waisted sharp pencil maxi with an oversized shirt to play on proportions. Adding a belt is another great way to break up the materials.”
