Sure, it’s nice to treat yourself now and then, but to see results you need regular treatments and the cost adds up quickly.
So if you’re after glowing, clearer, more youthful skin, investing in a microdermabrasion kit could be your saving grace.
WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION?
“Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive treatment, gently removing the outer layer of dead devitalised skin cells,” says aesthetic practitioner Sarah Hudson of Sydney-based clinic Skin by Sarah Hudson. “Tiny crystals gently exfoliate the skin while the slight vacuum suction draws impurities to the skin surface to be polished away, revealing clearer, smoother skin.”
Microdermabrasion is a popular skin treatment that can be performed at clinics and salons, but it’s also one you can DIY at home to save yourself money while reaping the many benefits.
“When dead skin cells are removed, it induces the skin renewal process where new healthy cells are produced,” Sarah explains.
“The removal of dead cells also enhances the penetration of skincare products, maximising their effectiveness on these healthy new cells. The vacuum suction increases stimulation of blood flow, boosting vibrant healthy skin.”

Suction is strong so make sure [you] read the instructions! So happy I purchased this”.
IS AT-HOME MICRODERMABRASION SAFE?
“For at home micro-dermabrasion, protocols similar to a clinic environment need to be followed,” Sarah advises.
“Ensure correct hygiene and disinfecting procedures are followed as per the manufacturer’s instructions. Look for a device that comes with a manual thoroughly explaining how to use it, how often to use it and precautions that need to be taken.
“Microdermabrasion should only be done as a weekly treatment, more than this can create skin problems by disrupting the natural skin barrier and leading to sensitivity.”
HOW DO I USE A MICRODERMABRASION KIT AT HOME?
According to Sarah, “Always follow the device instructions. Cleanse and dry the skin prior to treatment. Support the skin using an upward motion, and ensure only one to two passes is applied on each part of your face”.
It’s also important that you gently slide the tip off your skin at an angle – if you just lift it right off, you can risk applying too much pressure and bruising your skin.
“Do not use actives such as vitamin A, retinol or AHA’s the night prior to microdermabrasion as it could lead to skin sensitivity. Follow the treatment with a gentle, hydrating hyaluronic acid serum or mask or treatment facial oil.
I would recommend doing the treatment at night, so any skin redness has reduced before sun exposure the next day. Ensure SPF is applied the following day.”
