Most people have their hair care routine down pat – a shampoo and conditioner in the shower followed by a towel or blow dry and a brush. For more healthy and moisturised hair, many opt for a hair oil or serum to keep their locks luscious. But to be truly effective, it needs one key ingredient.

Argan oil is used as a hair care treatment to soften and hydrate hair while adding some shine, minimising frizziness and strengthening dry and brittle hair. It’s no wonder it’s called “liquid gold” for its ability to transform hair.

Our favourite argan oil hair treatment is the Cold Pressed pure oil by The Ordinary. It is made entirely from argan oil without any of the nasties you can find hidden in hair care treatments. It’s also vegan, cruelty free and packed to the brim with vitamins, antioxidants and nourishing fatty acids.

Read on to find all the best argan oil hair treatments on the market to help keep your hair silky smooth, hydrated, strong and stylish.

The Ordinary 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Moroccan Argan Oil. Picture: THE ICONIC.

Pros:

  • It is cold pressed, which maintains its high potency of vitamins and fatty acids.
  • It is vegan, certified organic, cruelty free and free from sulfates and artificial fragrances.
  • You can also apply it directly on skin, lips and nails.
  • The dark bottle protects the oil from light exposure, which helps retain its quality.

Cons:

  • It is only available in a small 30mL size.
  • One shopper said it took a while to completely absorb.

Size: 30mL | Hair types: Dry and brittle hair | Other ingredients: N/A

What You Need To Know

If you’re looking for pure, you won’t be able to top this. The Ordinary’s 100 per cent organic and pure argan oil contains all the antioxidants and fatty acids that will smooth, hydrate and nourish your hair without any additives.

During production, the oil is cold pressed, which retains all the goodness from the original argan tree nuts. It’s also stored in a dark bottle – this may not seem like a major feature, but argan oil kept in transparent or light coloured bottles lose potency faster, which reduces the shelf life and can make it less effective.

And it’s not just for hair. You can apply this oil directly on your face as part of your skincare routine, on your lips as an alternative to lip balm or on your nails and cuticles.

While it may be a small bottle, you only need a few drops for an effective treatment and you can’t go past the $13 price tag.

This oil has plenty of fans, with 92 per cent of Adore Beauty customers who tried it recommending it in their reviews.

One shopper said, “I have fine curly hair that gets destroyed from working outside five days a week in extreme weather conditions. I use this daily on my hair ends especially and my curls are looking good!”

Another added, “I scrunch in a little of this after I wash my hair when my hair is still just damp (I air dry) and it leaves my hair feeling so soft and bouncy. It doesn’t leave any nasty build-up or feel too heavy and a little bit goes a very long way!”

Tried and Tested by Harriet Amurao, news.com.au checkout Shopping Writer

This hair oil has been all over TikTok, so I obviously had to snap it up and see what all the hype is about.

All I have to say is WOW. On top of the argan oil, this godsend is packed with three types of honey – manuka honey, acacia honey and raw honey from Japan. It’s also formulated with essential goodies like propolis and hyaluronic acid – so it is incredibly moisturising and hydrating.

It has a luxe, lightweight texture that doesn’t feel sticky or thick, and it features a beautiful floral scent that smells divine and lingers – which I love. I use it after I shower and dry my hair, and it doesn’t leave my locks feeling heavy or oily.

While it is a bit pricey, it’s totally worth the price and one pump goes a long way. Believe the hype!

Bread is one of the best brands you’ll come across when it comes to curly hair. They’re known for making creating cult products that don’t weigh down your hair but help bring life and shine, and this hair oil is no different.

I use it during my curly hair routine, and normally after applying a gel. It helps to break down the hard cast from the gel and leaves my hair feeling soft and glossy but still allows the shape and curls from the other products to flourish.

I also use it as a pre-wash treatment and in-between washes to add extra shine. Plus, it smells amazing.

Moroccanoil Purple Original Oil Treatment, $49.95 (down from $62.50) at Amazon Australia

Moroccanoil Purple Original Oil Treatment. Picture: Amazon Australia.

Pros:

  • It is alcohol free, which makes it safer on more delicate hair that has been dyed or bleached.
  • You can apply it to damp hair for styling or dry hair to minimise frizz.
  • It is unscented.

Cons:

  • At 50mL, it’s one of the smaller oil treatment options Moroccanoil makes.
  • It is recommended to use up to three times a week to see the best results.

Size: 50mL | Hair types: All hair types – especially those with blonde, brassy or grey hair | Other ingredients: Cyclomethicone, dimethicone, added fragrance, linseed extract and caprylic triglyceride

What You Need To Know

The Moroccanoil Purple Original Oil Treatment takes all the nutrients and nourishment from the argan oil and linseed extract found in the traditional treatment and adds a violet pigment, making it ideal for those with blonde hair (natural or dyed), highlights or those starting to go grey.

The purple colouring helps to neutralise the brassy tones in your hair and maintain your look in between visits to the salon, and all while keeping it healthy, soft and hydrated.

Independent studies found that 95 per cent of users noticed less brassiness and thought it maintained their blonde hair in between salon sessions effectively. Meanwhile, 91 per cent said it has become a crucial element in their hair care regimen.

If that’s not enough, one Sephora shopper who left a five-star review raved, “I am a brunette with subtle highlights and a money piece who has always hated purple shampoo/conditioner. I LOVE this product.

“I put one pump in my hair before I style my hair (give the oil the time to fully absorb/dry into the hair). My hair comes out looking straight out of the salon every time, and keeps my blonde looking fresh. I highly recommend this product if your hair doesn’t hold toner very well!”

Adore Beauty and Sephora also sell a 25mL bottle if you want to start small before buying the full size.

Tried and Tested by Claudia Coy, news.com.au checkout Social Media Producer

Over the last 10 years, my hair has certainly been through the ringer. I’ve been bleached blonde, bottle-dyed black and then switched again to a more ‘lived in’ natural blonde. I often relied on purple shampoos to tide me over between salon trips and I have vivid memories of attacking my scalp with so much purple product I almost resembled Barney The Dinosaur. However, this Moroccanoil Purple Original Oil Treatment is a far cry from my purple shampoo days.

I apply it from my ends to the midsection of freshly-cleaned hair. I then brush it all the way through, avoiding my roots. The oil absorbs pretty quickly and delivers shine and softness to the hair almost instantly. The colour is much more subtle than a purple shampoo (in the best way possible) and it takes a few applications to see a real change in your blonde strands. The best part is that you don’t need to rinse it out – you just apply and go on with your normal hair cycle.

HOW WE CHOOSE PRODUCTS

Our team spends hours reading through reviews, ratings and articles to find the best products to include in our roundups. We also tested some of the most reputable products on the market to see if they live up to the hype and are worth your hard earned cash.

When it comes to argan oil hair treatments, we looked at suitability for different hair types, purity of the argan oil, other ingredients listed in the products, size and price.

WHAT TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING AN ARGAN OIL HAIR CARE PRODUCT

Hair types: Everyone’s hair is different and will have different needs. Some argan oil products are best for dry or fine hair, others for frizzy hair and some are best used on scalps or oily locks. Look for products that are best suited to your hair type to ensure you’re giving you hair exactly what it needs.

Size: Some hair types will only need a few drops of argan oil at a time and you may not need to apply as much as others. Weigh up how often you will use your treatment and how much you’ll need at a time to decide if a bigger bottle is the better choice.

Purity: Argan oil that is 100 per cent pure will give you the best and deepest moisturising, however many products contain other ingredients.

Sourcing: Producing argan oil by hand is a tiresome and laborious process. It’s a good idea to check that the product is ethically sourced, uses fair trade practices and is cruelty free before buying.

Price: Argan oil is a popular ingredient and is in high demand. It also isn’t easy to produce and only comes from one area of the world. All these factors can increase the price, so consider your budget and whether the benefits it offers are worth the price.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS ARGAN OIL?

Often called ‘liquid gold’, argan oil is derived from the nuts of the native Moroccan argan tree called the argania spinosa. It’s rich in nutrients and is believed to be beneficial for hair, skin and nails.

It can be applied directly as a pure oil, or it can be integrated as a key ingredient in beauty products.

Cold pressed argan oil is a better option as this process preserves the nutrients better compared to when it has been hot pressed. It should also be a light amber colour, as this will indicate a pure and high quality.

HOW DO I APPLY ARGAN OIL ON MY HAIR?

Add a few drops of your argan oil on your hands (around two or three drops for short hair and five or six drops for long or thick hair) and rub them together to warm it up. Start at the ends of your hair and work your way up, and massaging the oil using your fingers or a comb.

Begin the treatment in the morning and rinse away at the end of your day for a soft and shiny result. O, you can apply it to dry and unwashed hair as an overnight treatment to wash off when you wake up.

If you don’t want to leave it to condition for the day, you can apply some extra drops initially and wash it out after about 30 minutes.

When applying to damp or wet hair, make sure to towel dry beforehand as this helps with absorption. Use the oil sparingly on dry hair as it can create a greasy look.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING ARGAN OIL ON MY HAIR?

There are multiple benefits argan oil has on your hair that will make it an essential part of your day-to-day beauty regimen.

  • Hydrating and conditioning: With essential fatty acids like linoleic and oleic acid, argan oil can add some much needed hydration to your hair and lock in moisture to create a stunning shine.
  • Softening: After the oil absorbs into the hair, it will be smoother and softer with a glossy and shiny finish.
  • Strengthening: Argan oil is filled to the brim with vitamin E and antioxidants. This combination can improve hair elasticity and strength – particularly for those who have fine hair or have chemically dyed it. It can also minimise hair breakage as a result of heat damage from hair styling products and tools.
  • Soothing: Argan oil can have anti-inflammatory properties that can reduce dryness and skin flakiness on the scalp, which can be ideal for those who suffer from dandruff.
  • Styling: Applying argan oil to your hair can help tame frizz, add some shine and make your flyaways a thing of the past.

CAN YOU USE ARGAN OIL ON YOUR SKIN?

You can absolutely use argan oil on your skin! Like in hair care, the antioxidants, fatty acids and vitamin E help to hydrate, nourish, moisturise and soothe the skin. It’s also known to have anti-ageing properties, help with the appearance of scars, stretch marks and acne, improve skin elasticity and soothe the skin after sun exposure.

In additional to using it on their face, many choose to apply argan oil as a lip balm, nail and cuticle oil and body moisturiser.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ARGAN OIL AND ARGAN SERUM?

The main difference between argan oil and argan serum is how they are formulated. Argan oil is pure and naturally extracted from argan tree nuts. Argan serums use the oil with other nourishing ingredients.

Pure argan oil is best used for dry and damaged in need of a deep moisturising whereas serums are better at frizz control, styling, enhancing shine and soothing. Oil is also heavier but typically faster to absorb.

IS ARGAN OIL BETTER THAN KERATIN?

Both keratin and argan oil are excellent ingredients you should be looking for when buying hair care treatments. It is difficult to say which one is better than the other, as they work differently to achieve your desired result.

Argan oil is best used to moisturise and soften dry and frizzy hair while adding shine. The pure oil is 100 per cent natural and will see long term hydration to the hair. However, it will need ongoing and regular application to maintain hair health and appearance.

On the other hand, keratin is best used to straighten and strengthen your locks. While keratin is a natural protein, it often appears in more chemical based treatments and is frequently used in hair salons.

You don’t have to settle for one over the other, as both can be used as part of your regular hair treatment.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USE ARGAN HAIR OIL?

How regularly you should be using argan oil on your locks will vary depending on your hair type.

  • Dry hair: Up to three times a week – especially if it has been damaged from colouring or heat styling.
  • Moisture balanced or normal hair: Once or twice a week is appropriate to maintain its shine, softness and moisture level.
  • Oily hair: Once a week, and it should be used sparingly as it can create a greasy look.
  • Frizzy hair: After styling or touching-up your look to ensure the flyaways are under control and it stays shiny and soft.

DOES ALL ARGAN OIL COME FROM MOROCCO?

Argan oil primarily comes from Morocco as it is derived from a tree native to the area. However, as the demand for the product continues to grow, regions like Tunisia and Algeria are also producing the oil.

While some products claim to be pure argan oil, check the packaging and ensure it is sourced from Morocco or the nearby regions. Reputable brands will also source their oil ethically with sustainable harvesting practices and quality working environments that support the community.

WHAT OTHER HAIR OILS HELP WITH OVERALL HAIR HEALTH?

In addition to argan oil, many hair care treatments also use other nourishing and vitamin rich ingredients to effectively maintain hair health and appearance.

  • Coconut oil: This intensely moisturises hair using fatty acids to reduce protein loss and maintain hair strength.
  • Jojoba oil: Similar to the sebum produced by the scalp, jojoba oil helps maintain moisture while balancing oil production. It’s also rich in vitamin E for added nourishment.
  • Olive oil: Softening the hair while adding moisture, olive oil is both antioxidant and vitamin E rich, and can aid in maintaining scalp health.
  • Almond oil: Containing Omega 3, magnesium and vitamin E, almond oil can improve hair texture, control frizz and minimise breakage.
  • Tea Tree oil: This oil is known for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, which can help with itchiness, irritation and dandruff.
  • Avocado oil: This can restore dry and damaged hair strands and act as a sun protectant thanks to the high levels of vitamin A, D and E.
  • Hemp seed oil: With essential fatty acids omega 3 and omega 6, hemp seed oil can help balance oil production from the scalp and strengthen hair strands.
