Anyone who’s gone blonde will tell you just how addictive it is. You start off with a few highlights and then BAM you’re booking in to go full Marilyn Monroe/Margot Robbie/insert your favourite blonde celebrity.
The downside? The upkeep. Whether it’s natural or with help, turns out blonde ambition is hella expensive. But there’s a surprising supermarket secret many swear by to sweeten the deal. Yep, a $13 purple shampoo that rivals a professional treatment is hiding in your local grocery store and people are HOOKED.
PRO:VOKE Touch of Silver Advanced Brighten & Repair Purple Shampoo, $12.95 at Priceline
WHAT IS THE BEST-SELLING PURPLE SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER?
Boasting the title of the UK’s #1 purple brand, the Pro:Voke Touch Of Silver Brightening Shampoo and Intensive Conditioner (both conveniently available at Woolworths and Priceline) have amassed thousands of glowing reviews over the years for their results in brightening blonde, grey or platinum hair and reducing brassiness. Glass hair anyone?
“If I’m being honest, as I took it to the till I just thought ‘stuff like this never works, it will probably be a waste of money’ and HOW PLEASANTLY SURPRISED WAS I,” wrote one reviewer, while another raved “it’s better than a salon product”.
So is it really a cult combo or is it just too good to be true?
IS THE PRO:VOKE TOUCH OF SILVER RANGE AS GOOD AS THEY SAY?
While my natural hair colour is brown, I’ve been varying levels of blonde for the past three years. Having blonder highlights lifts and brightens my face and when it comes to summer, I love to take it up a notch. The only problem is all my other favourite warm weather activities - swimming, sunshine and styling it for lots of events - mean the brassiness and dryness happens faster than ever.
I’ve used purple shampoos for years, never really loyal to one in particular, but this was my first time trying Pro:Voke. I’d heard friends talk about it before but admittedly dismissed it thinking anything that affordable would probably turn my curly hair to straw.
The shampoo itself is a deep, dark purple which is what you want to properly tone. The smell is pleasant if subtle and definitely not overwhelming. I applied from root to tip and left for a few minutes before washing out. My hair did feel a little dry at this point but this quickly changed after applying the conditioner which made my hair feel genuinely soft and silky. What had I been missing out on!?
WHAT WERE THE RESULTS ON BLONDE HIGHLIGHTS?
My first use of the combo came about a month after my most recent colouring at the hairdressers. I immediately noticed the brightness and reduced brassiness of the colour without stripping my hair of its silkiness. Recommended for weekly use rather than every hair wash, the big difference came after the second use when not one but TWO colleagues commented on how refreshed and radiant my hair was and asked if I’d been to the hairdressers and gone lighter. Win!
With budgets on the brain and many of us trying to stretch out our appointments a little bit, it’s a brilliant option for getting more bang for your blonde.
HOW DOES A PURPLE SHAMPOO WORK?
Purple shampoos work to counteract the brassiness (warm, yellow tones) that can appear in blonde hair thanks to product build up, chlorine, environmental exposure and heat styling.
As purple and yellow are opposites on the colour wheel (flashback to primary school art classes, anyone?) the purple pigment works to balance out the warm yellow tones with a cooler tone.
WHO IS THE PRO:VOKE TOUCH OF SILVER PURPLE SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER SUITABLE FOR?
You don’t have to be completely blonde to get the benefits of the products. Designed for natural, coloured, highlighted or platinum blonde, white and grey hair, it’s a haircare must for anyone on the blonde scale.
Because the unique formula also repairs damaged hair bonds with pro-vitamin B5 while it removes any brassy tones, it treats multiple needs and concerns in one.
WILL I KEEP USING BOTH PRODUCTS?
Absolutely! At just $13 each, it’s a no-brainer not to beeline for them during your supermarket shop (after the snack aisle, obviously). Because my curly hair is naturally dryer, I’ll use them alongside an occasional additional hydrating treatment in summer for an added boost but consider me converted.
If you’re after luxury for less, this is an insane hero buy I’d definitely recommend and now can’t live without.
