A storm alert has been issued for a large section of Western Australia’s southwest as a cold front brings with it wild weather which is set to impact the eastern states later in the week.

WA’s Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) issued the alert at 7.16am on Monday, covering the Perth metro area, up the coast to Kalbarri, out to the Goldfields town of Laverton, down to the state’s southern coast, and back up to Perth – but doesn’t include a large part of the South West region.

“The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) advised that a strong cold front associated with a deep low in the Southern Ocean will strengthen north-westerly winds from Monday morning as it crosses the south of the state,” the DFES alert read.

“Locally damaging wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h are possible across the warning area, mainly with showers and thunderstorms, and may cause damage to homes and property.

“Wind gusts will strengthen over coastal parts of the warning area during Monday morning and extend during Monday afternoon and evening.

“Wind gusts will ease in the Perth region during late Monday afternoon, then contract to east of Geraldton to Ravensthorpe during Monday evening.”

“This weather is not unusual for this time of year, but could damage homes and make travel dangerous,” said the DFES.

The front will move east in the coming days and is set to impact South Australia, Victoria, and NSW from Wednesday.

“This is likely to be heavy with gusty winds sweeping through South Australia on Wednesday morning and Victoria and NSW on Wednesday night,” Sky Weather meteorologist Alison Osborne said.

“That blustery cold front with showers and storms will then hinge over to the coast on Thursday into Friday.”
