A car caught on fire after an electrical wiring fault forced a busy street to be shut down as emergency crews made the area safe.

Fire and Rescue NSW were called to Wilson St in Newtown after reports electrical wires were down and strewn across the road about 2.45pm on Friday.

Initial reports suggested a building fire could have been possible.

However, a FRNSW spokeswoman said emergency crews discovered a car had caught on fire when they arrived at the scene.

“Heavy wiring came down towards some cars causing the fire risk,” she said.

“An exclusion zone was set up”.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

Wilson St was closed both directions between King St and Erskineville Rd while emergency crews worked at the scene.

Wilson St has since reopened westbound in Newtown but remains closed eastbound.

There is currently no access to Wilson St from King St.
