Inside bikie gang's leadership coup

Mongols turmoil

Tensions are growing within the Mongols following a leadership coup and the expulsion of key members, including former national president Toby Mitchell. This is how the drama unfolded and what it means for the outlaw bikie gang.

In a leadership coup that stunned many in Melbourne's underworld, Mitchell was ousted from the Mongols gang and presidency on April 1 and ordered to remove his club tattoos.

Power moves

The exact reason for Mitchell's expulsion isn't known, though it's believed his links to a certain criminal identity and his high profile were contributing factors to the decision.

Sources close to the gang say the club has shed more members over the recent turmoil, with some bikies from the Coburg, Port Melbourne and Echuca chapters voluntarily handing in their patches.

Member unrest

The Herald Sun understands the recent internal upheaval has also had big international consequences, with members from Russia and Ukraine chapters walking away from the gang because of the rancour.

There is also speculation the power takeover could have serious consequences within Melbourne’s underworld, with a well-placed source claiming the Mongols are bracing for potential retaliation attacks.

New Mongols national president Nick 'The Knife' Forbes is said to have adopted a cold-blooded leadership style and is looking to boot anyone aligned with Mitchell.

New regime

From the Gold Coast, Forbes has a fearsome reputation within the bikie community, with one source describing him as "ruthless".

Forbes' new regime is enforced by sergeant-at-arms Phillip Main, who has an extensive criminal record.

The 48-year-old has a history of drug and weapons offences and once threw a man off a nightclub balcony while working as a bouncer.

After his ousting from the Mongols, Mitchell reportedly indicated he was finished with the OMCG world, but the fact is he remains one of its best-connected figures.

Fresh chapter

There are those who believe Mitchell would be a valuable acquisition for another club if he decided to sign on elsewhere.

Before joining the Mongols he was a member of the Bandidos and narrowly survived a public execution attempt in 2011.
