Spending top dollar on private education doesn’t always pay off, with the two of the most expensive schools in Victoria ranked below dozens of other cheaper colleges for NAPLAN results.

The latest NAPLAN results for secondary schools shows Geelong Grammar – Victoria’s most expensive school – is ranked 89th.

Tuition fees next year cost just under $47,000 for years 10 to 12 non-boarding students at the Corio campus.

The prestigious school achieved an average score of 603.6 for year 9 in key areas including reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy.

The rankings are generated by averaging year nine NAPLAN results.

Mount Scopus Memorial College in Burwood, which is ranked 80th, also charges high fees up to $41,000.

The King David School in Armadale has fees up to $40,000 but is ranked at 72.

The data also reveals Xavier College in Kew came in at 63, but charges up to $37,000.

St Michael’s Grammar School in St Kilda charges up to $31,000, but is ranked 127th in the state.

Meanwhile, the investment pays off at the other schools including Presbyterian Ladies’ College in Burwood, which has been assessed as fifth in the state.

The girls’ school charges just under $35,000 for year 12 fees and achieved a median score of 604.2

Haileybury College in Keysborough, which costs just under $36,000, also ranked ninth in the state.

The elite Scotch College in Hawthorn, which charges just under $39,000, also ranked 19th in the state.

It comes after the Herald Sun revealed earlier this year that Geelong Grammar hiked its fees, blaming it on the “rising costs of staff salaries” and changes to payroll tax exemptions”.

Caulfield Grammar also increased some of its fees by 13 per cent amid the new payroll tax, with tuition now costing $40,543 for year 12 students at the school’s secondary campuses in Caulfield and Wheelers Hill.

Haileybury College notified families of fee hikes next year, with a 5.5 per cent increase on ELC to year 12 tuition costs.
