Private schools
Thirty private schools posted scores of 35 and above, with the list dominated by top-dollar private schools with fees of more than $35,000 such as Camberwell Grammar, Bialik College and The King David School.
But some other high-fee schools don’t make the best-of list, including Wesley College, which has a VCE score of 31, along with Xavier College (33) and Carey Grammar (33).
Some lower-fee schools such as Ballarat Clarendon College, St Kevin’s College and
Sacre Coeur make the list, offering a great value for money education.
One of the top schools is Korowa Anglican Girls’ School, which had a median ATAR of 94.1 and a median study score of 36.
Principal Frances Booth said: “We strive to prepare our students for the world beyond school”.
“The lessons they learnt extend far beyond textbooks and ATARS — they include the power of collaboration, the strength found in overcoming challenges, and the importance of embracing diversity.”
Another high-performing school is Mount Scopus Memorial College, which posted a median study score of 37 and a median ATAR of 92.1
Principal Rabbi James Kennard said: “Our class of 2023 are to be congratulated on these wonderful VCE results”.
“This cohort of active, community minded students have demonstrated both extraordinary school involvement and an outstanding commitment to their studies,” he said.
Loreto Mandeville also posted a median study score of 36, with principal Angela O’Dwyer full of praise.
“The class of 2023 are fully deserving of their extraordinary results and we are very proud of what they and their teachers have accomplished,” Ms O’Dwyer said.
Brighton Grammar also made the best-of list with a median ATAR of 89.7 and a median study score of 36.
Headmaster Ross Featherston said: “I am very proud of our year 12s who adopted the legacy motto of stand beside – by supporting each other and those in our community this year,” Mr Featherston said.
“They have held leadership roles, played sport, performed music and drama and undertaken community service activities. These experiences have enhanced their academic success and hopefully will set them up to have successful and happy lives.”
State schools
Not surprisingly, four of the best five state schools by median VCE score are all selective high schools.
Melbourne High, MacRobertson Girls’ High and Nossal High all top the list on 36.
Next are John Monash Science School and the selective Suzanne Cory High School, which both achieved median VCE scores of 35.
Following them on the list are two state schools in regional areas, Corryong College and Mallacoota P-12 College, both on 34.
Melbourne High students received three perfect ATAR scores of 99.95 and the school had a median ATAR of 94.7.
The school’s principal Dr Tony Mordini said he was “incredibly proud” of students’ efforts.
“The students have shown amazing dedication to their studies and worked really hard,” Dr Mordini said.
“They were in their earlier years during Covid, they had a disruption to their education. Despite this hurdle, they’ve risen above this.”
Balwyn High is another star performer, with an average VCE median score of 32 and 15 students who achieved an ATAR of 99 and above.
“Our students are just amazing as are our staff and I could not be prouder of them,” principal Deborah Harman said.
Vermont Secondary College was one of 12 schools with a median VCE score of 32.
The school has six students who received ATARs of 99 or higher, while 65 students scored over 90.
Principal Tony Jacobs described the results as outstanding.
“Well done and congratulations to the class of 2023 – an amazing result!” he said.
