One of Victoria’s top-performing students, Krishav Malhotra from Melbourne High School, was “emotional” and “excited” yesterday after receiving four perfect study scores of 50.
He joins 38 other students who received an ATAR of 99.95, including Ronan Ahl from Scotch College who was the third brother in his family to get the highest score in the past four years.
Out of the students who gave permission for their results to be published, 567 received perfect scores of 50 in one subject or more, 338 received at least one 49 and 464 received at least one 48.
The ATAR is a tertiary grade based on the best possible combination of subject study scores which are marked out of 50.
Mr Malhotra received perfect scores in English, maths methods, physics and specialist maths. He also achieved a study score of 43 in chemistry this year and 45 in biology last year.
“I wasn’t expecting it, I’m feeling quite emotional,” Mr Malhotra said.
“My parents are very proud, we might do a small family trip to celebrate.”
He hopes to go on to study medicine at university.
Overall, four perfect study scores came from students studying at overseas schools, 310 came from independent schools, 155 from government schools and 97 from Catholic schools.
The subjects with the most scores over 40 were English with 2885, followed by general maths with 2129 and psychology with 1233.
Schools pleased with their results include St Catherine’s School, which posted its highest ever median ATAR of 93.4, Strathcona which had a median ATAR of 90.9 and Brighton Grammar which had a median ATAR of 89.7.
State schools posting excellent results include Kew High which had a median ATAR of 75.4, Bentleigh Secondary College with 73.23 and Hoppers Crossing Secondary College with 61.7 – its best ever.
It comes as principals and educational leaders paid tribute to the class of 2023.
North Geelong Secondary College principal Nicolas Adamou said he was the “proudest principal” in the state and was “over the moon” after seeing the school’s results on Monday morning.
An ATAR over 80 was achieved by 30 per cent of the school’s year 12 cohort, while 40 per cent of students received a ranking above 70.
The three top Al-Taqwa College students, who were given cash prizes of up to $10,000, were lauded by vice-principal Mohammad Hallak for their “truly remarkable” results.
St Albans College principal Craig Jennings also lauded his hardworking pupils.
“There’s no doubt students in this year have struggled as a result of Covid – and that’s true of all schools,” he said.
School by school: students celebrate results
“But they have done really well, and I’m very pleased with the results. They’ve managed to pull it together in the end, which is great.”
Year 11 St Albans student Kelly Lam, who studied units three and four in biology and maths this year, achieved two perfect study scores of 50.
She said the key to her success was to be “consistent throughout the year”.
“In order to do well you need to put in effort everyday, not just for exams,” she said.
“I hope to work as hard and achieve as much next year.”
Meanwhile, 39 students from St Albans received a study score over 40 and four students got ATARs in the 97s, including dux Stella Xie.
Other students from non-selective state schools with two perfect scores include those from Balwyn High and Parkdale Secondary College.
