It could only happen at a Scotch College function.
The school’s new principal Dr Scott Marsh brought the house down when he played a spectacular trumpet solo on Friday night as part of an ode criticising the Andrews’ Government’s plans to remove the payroll tax exemption from 110 private schools.
Dr Marsh was guest of honour at the Annual Scotch Collegians Association Annual Dinner, held at Leonda by the Yarra.
Other high profile guests included state Liberal opposition leader John Pesutto, Teal MP Monique Ryan and Melbourne mayor Sally Capp who was the guest speaker.
Lyrics of the song, superbly performed by Dr Marsh, included: “Taxing time and the stakes are high”.
“Taxing time, who’s to blame for this mess we’re in?
“I think it’s Covid, RBA, some old spin.”
The song, dubbed Taxing Time, was set to Summertime by US composer and pianist George Gershwin.
When Dr Marsh received a standing ovation from the crowd after his performance.
Mr Pesutto said Dr Marsh had delivered an impressive speech and performance.
“Scott began with an erudite speech full of philosophical observations from Seneca and finished with the classiest virtuoso trumpet performance, channelling James Morrison doing a rendition of Sumertime for the ages.”
Schools such as Scotch, which in 2021 had an annual income of $62m, including $1.5m in State Government funds, are in the firing line to be among the first schools in the country to be hit with the controversial tax.
