A small government school has outshone a top private school in the 2024 primary school NAPLAN results for the Goulburn Valley and surrounds.
An analysis of NAPLAN results for Year 5 and 9 students ranked Katamatite Primary School the best in the region, ahead of Goulburn Valley Grammar School.
But the independent school — where parents pay more than $16,000 a year to send their children to secondary — topped the region for year 9 results.
Despite spelling being the grammar school’s weakness, it still outperformed all other secondary schools in the region.
Braemar College in Woodend, Shepparton Christian College, Cobram Anglican Grammar School and FCJ College rounded out the top five.
Rushworth P-12 College, Benalla P-12 College and Greater Shepparton Secondary College came in at the bottom of the rankings.
Government schools did well for grade 5 results, with Katamatite Primary School leading the way and Moyhu Primary School and Toolamba Primary School also in the top five.
Katamatite Primary School principal Jason Whiteley said he was “absolutely rapt” with his school’s results.
“We really get to know our students and how they learn,” he said.
“This means we can fill all the gaps and push students to the next stage of their learning.
“These results show real growth in our teaching and learning environment.”
Goulburn Valley Grammar School in Shepparton and Benalla’s Australian Christian College also received top scores.

The bottom ten Goulburn Valley primary schools all scored an average mark of less than 450, with Mooroopna Park Primary School only scoring 399.4 whose scores dropped in all subjects compared to 2023 results.
To determine how each school performed in 2024, the scores for all five test subjects for the student cohort – Year 5 or Year 9 – were combined and the average found.
Students are tested on the reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy skills.
