A 45-year-old man has died after a large branch fell onto his moving car while his family was inside.
Police believe the family was trying to leave Loop Track in Yarrawonga during a large storm on Tuesday night but were blocked by a fallen tree.
The family, from the nearby area, is understood to have turned around, trying to drive the opposite direction when they were hit by the large tree branch.
“It was a freak accident,” Sergeant Shaun Hillier said.
A teenage boy was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a woman was also taken to hospital for observation.
Emergency services were called to the scene at 7.10pm and had to pause their investigation to evacuate the area as a second storm front passed through the area.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
Loop Track is a popular camping area that runs along the Murray River on the Victorian New South Wales border.
On Wednesday, the area remained blocked off.
There are toppled trees and branches strewn across the roadside leading up to Loop Track.
Tamara Smith, who was camping in Yarrawonga on Tuesday night, said the storms were very scary.
“The trees were really swaying, and you never know when some of the branches on these large gums will drop,” she said.
“We had to move our caravan to make sure it was under any trees.
“This must be so devastating for a family who was trying to do the same and escape.”
