NAPLAN: Top-performing public primary schools in Melbourne

Melbourne’s east is home to the top public primary schools in the state, with many outperforming their private counterparts. See the best schools near you.

Melbourne’s east is home to the state’s highest achieving public primary schools, with many outperforming their private counterparts.

The Herald Sun has compiled a list of Victoria’s best academic public primary schools according to average year 5 NAPLAN results in 2022.

The top 12 state primary schools are all located in suburbs in Melbourne’s east, including Doncaster, Wheelers Hill and Mount Waverley.

Serpell Primary School in Templestowe was the highest ranked state primary school in Victoria with an average NAPLAN score of 579.2.

It topped nearby St Charles Borromeo School which had an average of 502 and charges $2168 in fees.

Beverley Hills Primary School in Doncaster East came in second with an average score of 577.6, followed by Canterbury Primary School with 568.4.

Glendal Primary School in Glen Waverley ranked sixth, outperforming nearby St Leonard’s Catholic Primary School, which charges $2196 per student.

Oakleigh South Primary School received an average score of 562.4 – more than eight points higher than independent school Oakleigh Grammar, where it costs $12,025 to enrol a Year 5 student.

Templeton Primary School in Wantirna ranked 23, also outperforming its prestigious counterpart The Knox School, which charges more than $20,000 for a student in Year 5.

The trend continues in regional Victoria with Chilwell Primary School achieving a score of 533.6, more than 20 points higher than The Geelong College a stone’s throw away.

The Geelong College charges a whooping $25,476 in fees for a Year 5 student.

Of the top 100 performing state primary schools, more than half (54) are in Melbourne’s east.

A further 17 are in the city’s south, in suburbs including Bentleigh, Glen Huntly, Brighton and Hampton.

A total of 15 are in Melbourne’s north, with just nine in regional Victoria and five in the city’s west.

Beverley Hills Primary School principal Jennifer Watson said she was “extremely proud” of the students’ NAPLAN results.

“We have high expectations for all our students, and we are extremely fortunate to work with families who value education and trust us to work to achieve the best outcomes for their children,” she said.

Serpell Primary School principal Wilma Culton said she credits the school’s academic success to high quality teaching and cohesive curriculum and assessment plans.

“The focus of the school is on learning, differentiating the program to match individual student needs and believing that every child can achieve,” she said.

Education Minister Natalie Hutchins said Victorian students continue to achieve some of the highest results in the country.

“The outstanding results of these schools are a testament to the exceptional performance of Victoria’s primary schools in NAPLAN 2022, reflecting the extraordinary work of parents, teachers, school leaders and students right across the state,” she said.
