A Melbourne schoolgirl has spoken out about being part of the famous Maccas muck-up day prank saying the reaction had been “really positive”.

The stunt involved the year 12 cohort from Sacre Coeur in Glen Iris, a Catholic girls’ school, storming an eastern suburbs McDonald’s store last Friday all identically dressed as Ronald McDonald.

The female student, 18, from Brighton, who doesn’t want to be named, said the event was well received, even by the staff.

“We were only there for about five minutes and we didn’t get food or anything,” she said.

“So I think that made a difference. People have been really nice and said it was good to see something wholesome.”

The girls’ final day of classes started with breakfast at a student’s house then they all boarded a party bus bringing them to school.

“We pulled into the Maccas on the way and went in there and started singing our school song and chanting 24, 24, 24,” she said.

The girls are members of the class of 2024.

She said her school “was a little scared of the media but happy that it’s all been positive”.

While some people commenting on the posts questioned the impact on staff of around 100 girls swarming into the fast food restaurant, the girls posting the clips insisted that “they loved us”.

The students have been widely praised online for being respectful and not destructive.

The student, who is about to sit her year 12 exams next week, said the group included “just about every girl in the school year”.

“Other schools were all dressing up as the same characters and one of our school captains, I think, came up with this idea,” she said. “We got the costumes from eBay and it was great to have everyone together.”

Since the girls posted the clips of them celebrating the end of their school days, the views, likes and comments have been steadily increasing.

Now more than 46 million people have now watched the four clips, leaving 8 million likes and 28,000 comments since last Friday. The small schoolgirls’ TikTok account, mainly consisting of photos of them socialising, now has 20,000 followers.

Muck-up day 2024: The best pranks

One McDonald’s worker said: “As an employee of McDonald’s, I guarantee they talked about y’all for the next like hour afterwards, and you likely made their day”.

The girls were praised online for being respectful and not destructive.

In a statement, McDonald’s Australia said: “We loved seeing our customers showing their fandom for McDonald’s and interacting with our crew.

“We’ve invited the young women back to help us celebrate the McHappiest time of the year, McHappy Day, with the local community on Saturday November 16.”

Despite a move from most schools to turn muck-up days into more respectful celebration days, students still managed to have fun and run amok.

At Melbourne Girls’ College, students turned the staffroom into a disco and partied.

At Epping Secondary College, teachers were doused in shaving cream and the campus was decorated with toilet paper streamers.

Oakleigh Grammar had a dunk tank and water fights with teachers, and students from Sacred Heart College in Geelong had a colour run and dress-ups where they parodied boys from nearby St Joseph’s College.

At Templestowe College, kids filled hallways with balloons, put a “For Sale” sign on the school gate and filled the garden with inflatables.

At Star of the Sea College, girls took over a tram carriage, filling it with crazy string to the bemusement of passengers.

At Camberwell High, male and female students swapped uniforms, dressed up and had water fights.
