A prison officer was attacked by an inmate at Parkville Youth Justice Centre on Monday.

It is believed the worker was repeatedly punched to the head in a remand unit shortly after midday.

The injured officer was taken to hospital and the unit placed into lockdown.

Paramedics assessed a man for upper body injuries at 12.45pm.

He was transferred to hospital in a stable condition.

A prison source said the inmate was ordered to leave the kitchen area, triggering the assault.

It is the latest attack on staff at the troubled youth jail.

Community and Public Sector Union spokesman Julian Kennelly said staff have “lost confidence” in management’s ability to protect staff.

“The job’s worth more than the two per cent offered to turn up and watch colleagues get bashed,” he said.

“There’s still too many labour hire and casuals and cutting costs is counter-productive when staff are hospitalised and off work for long periods because not all are adequately trained.”

The Department of Justice and Community Safety was contacted for comment.
